USC Women Win UTRGV Holiday Classic With 10th Victory Of The Year
December 20, 2017 | Women's Basketball, Features
Kristen Simon, Sadie Edwards and Aliyah Mazyck earn All-Tournament Honors.
EDINBURG, TEXAS — The USC women's basketball team never trailed past the second minute of action, but had to contend with a determined host in order to lock up the Trojans' 10th win of the season. UT Rio Grande Valley had it at a two-point game at halftime and a single-digit margin late in the game, but USC was able to fend off the Vaqueros to win this one 71-64. The Trojans improve to 10-1 on the year with a victorious run at the UTRGV Holiday Classic in Edinburg, Texas. UTRGV is now 10-5 overall.
At the close of the event, Kristen Simon was named MVP of the UTRGV Holiday Classic, joined by Sadie Edwards and Aliyah Mazyck on the All-Tournament Team.
USC's 10-point lead in the second quarter was swiftly struck down as UTRGV shot 50 percent from the floor in that 10-minute span while the Trojans hit the skids and shot just 22 percent in the second. USC was effective in getting to the free-throw line, but it was the hosts' offensive push in the second that tightened up the game by halftime. The Trojans were up 29-27 despite shooting 30.8 percent from the field in the first half, trailing UTRGV's 46.2 effort. USC went 9-of-14 from the line while the Vaqueros shot no free throws in the first half. Sadie Edwards was the only player in double digits by halftime, holding 12 points for the Trojan cause as USC looked to get back into gear for the second half.
USC upped its production in the third to build out a 19-point lead and finished up the game shooting 38.9 percent. That trailed UTRGV's hot 48.1 percent from the floor, but the Trojans landed 11 threes and went 18-of-25 from the free-throw line. UTRGV made eight threes and was 4-of-7 from the line. The Vaqueros outrebounded the Trojans 36-33, but USC forced 19 turnovers out of UTRGV.
USC also received a game-high 23 points from Sadie Edwards, who knocked down a career-high six 3-pointers, along with the 21st career double-double for Kristen Simon, who finished with 17 poitns and 12 rebounds. Aliyah Mazyck also hit double digits with 12 points, and Minyon Moore added 10 for the Trojan cause, while Jordan Adams contributed six assists for USC. UTRGV was led by Laura Van Tilberg's double-double on 18 points and 10 rebounds, and 17 points from Krisynthia Sampson, along with 12 from Jameka Dowell.
Sadie Edwards had the hot hand for the Trojans out of the gates as she single-handedly staked USC to an 8-2 lead after UTRGV opened the game with a bucket. Minyon Moore and Kristen Simon stretched that USC advantage out to 12-2, but the hosts were undeterred. Although USC led it 18-9 at the end of the first quarter, the Vaqueros melted down a 10-point USC lead in the second quarter. Up 22-12 early in the second, USC slumped from the floor while UTRGV rattled off a run that made it a two-point game by halftime.
The Trojans regrouped for the third thanks in part to a super-charged Edwards, who knocked down three more 3-pointers to notch a new career high for herself with six threes landed in this one. Minyon Moore and Mazyck also dropped bombs from beyond the arc to help USC balloon its lead out to 53-34 before UTRGV struck twice to wrap the quarter with the USC lead at 53-38. In the fourth, UTRGV would carve down the USC advantage to single digits with an early 8-0 rally that made it 53-46. The Vaqueros would nail four 3-pointers of their own in the final 10 minutes to put pressure on the Trojans, getting it to a seven-point game in the final minute. But USC was able to hold its ground from the stripe to finish out the final 71-64 win and improve to 10-1 on the year while claiming the title at the UTRGV Holiday Classic.
The Women of Troy now take a short break for the holidays before turning to start Pac-12 play at the end of the calendar year. USC will open conference action with a Dec. 29 game at California before a New Year's Eve matchup at Stanford.
