Six Lacrosse Trojans Receive MPSF All-Academic Honors

USC seniors Kylie Drexel and Nina Kelty each receive their third-career conference academic awards
LOS ANGELES – USC lacrosse senior attacker Kylie Drexel (Davis, Calif./Davis HS) and senior defender Nina Kelty (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS) each received their third-career Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic awards to highlight a group of six Women of Troy selected for the scholastic honor announced by league executive director Al Beaird on Friday, May 26.
Junior goalie Gussie Johns (Washington, D.C./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School) earned her second-career academic award while sophomore defender Jackie Gilbert (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley HS) and sophomore attacker Gabbi Klein (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista HS) were each placed on the academic team for the first times in their careers.
Gilbert holds the team's highest grade-point average with a 3.70 in real estate development. Johns is next in line with a 3.65 GPA as a business administration major. Kelty holds a 3.41 in communication; Drexel a 3.16 in human biology; Michael a 3.05 in business administration; and Klein has a 3.02 GPA in public relations.
In order to be selected for MPSF All-Academic honors, student-athletes must meet the following requirements: have a 3.00 or better cumulative grade-point average; be at least a sophomore academically; have completed one full academic year at the institution prior to the season for which the award is received; and have competed in 50 percent or more of the institution's competitions.
USC was ranked No. 8 in the final 2017 IWLCA Coaches Poll following an 18-4 season, which saw the Women of Troy advance to the program's second-consecutive NCAA quarterfinal game. The Trojans went 8-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's final season and won back-to-back league regular-season and tournament titles. USC earned its third straight bid into the NCAA tournament and was led by first-team All-American and two-time MPSF Player of the Year Michaela Michael who finished as the program's all-time leader for goals (234), points (305), and draw controls (422). Junior defender Lydia Sutton was named a third-team IWLCA All-American. Head coach Lindsey Munday earned her 69th-career victory and guided the program to its highest ranking (No. 3) and second-longest winning streak in school history (12).
