USC Women Round Out Another Road Sweep With 72-61 Win At Washington
January 28, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Sadie Edwards leads all the 26 points to pace the Trojans to victory in Seattle.
SEATTLE, WASH. — The USC women's basketball team claimed its first road sweep of the Washington schools since 2011-12 and second Pac-12 road sweep of the year with a 72-61 win over Washington today in Seattle. Kristen Simon delivered her second straight double-double, and Sadie Edwards led all scorers with 26 points to help keep the Trojans out ahead of the Huskies. USC improves to 15-6 overall and to 5-5 in Pac-12 play with the victory. Washington goes to 7-14, 1-9.
USC was in control in the first half, manufacturing a 27-point lead and gripping a 40-19 halftime advantage. Washington would recover from a slow first quarter, however, turning a 12.5 percent shooting effort in those first 10 minutes into a final output of 45.1 percent. USC, meanwhile, would cool off from 52.9 percent in the first frame to finish up at 48.2 percent, but the damage was done with USC's strong first half effort. USC also led on the boards 39-22 and forced 21 turnovers by the Huskies, committing 18 of their own but still remaining in control.
Sadie Edwards' 26 points led the Trojans, with Kristen Simon and Aliyah Mazyck issuing 16 points apiece while Simon also secured 14 rebounds for her 25th career double-double and second of the week. Minyon Moore had nine points and served up six assists and nabbed six steals for the Trojans. Washington received 25 points from Amber Melgoza.
Washington landed a pair of 3-pionters in the first few minutes of action, only to see the Trojans set off on a 14-0 run to claim a 22-6 lead by the end of the first frame. The Huskies would heat up a bit in the second, but USC was still able to manufacture an 11-0 surge that carried the Trojans ahead to a daunting 35-8 advantage with 5:40 on the clock. By halftime, UW had carved that down a bit, as USC gripped a 40-19 lead at the break.
In the third, Washington opened up with the first punch, scoring twice to set up a back-and-forth battle that had the Huskies outscore USC 19-17 in that 10-minute stretch. USC's Kristen Simon had worked her way to her 25th career double-double along the way, while Sadie Edwards continued to fire off buckets for the Trojans. She'd nail a buzzer beater to bring USC to a 57-38 lead at the end of the third. USC needed a lift in the fourth and received it when Ja'Tavia Tapley picked off a UW pass and took it to the hoop to snap a 5-0 Husky rally. Tapley's first points of the day made it 61-45 USC with 6:05 on the clock. USC had already been tagged with five fouls by then, forcing the Trojans to smarten up for the final stretch. Washington trimmed the USC advantage down to 10 points with three consecutive 3-pointers, but Edwards drained one of her own with 1:20 to go to make it 69-56. The Huskies wouldn't go away, but USC was able to hold them off and close out a 72-61 road win.
The Trojans now return to Los Angeles for a pair of rivalry clashes against UCLA. USC is due to visit the Bruins for an 8 p.m. matchup on Friday (Feb. 2) before hosting the Bruins at 6 p.m. next Monday (Feb. 5) at Galen Center.
