No. 9 Oregon Fends Off USC Women For 70-66 Win At Galen Center
January 05, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Four Trojans hit double digits in an all-out battle against a top-10 foe.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team had the No. 9 team in the nation locked up even with 1:50 to go, only to see Oregon land a 3-pointer that helped put the Ducks back in the driver's seat for an eventual 70-66 victory over the host Trojans tonight at Galen Center. Oregon had taken the lead from the Trojans late in the second quarter, but USC never backed down throughout the second half to keep the highly ranked Ducks on notice. The loss moves USC to 10-4 overall and to 0-3 in Pac-12 play, while Oregon goes to 14-2, 3-0.
USC had crafted a seven-point lead at the close of the first quarter, but Oregon heated up and landed four 3-pointers in the second to creep into the lead, up 29-24 by halftime. The Ducks were shooting 34.6 percent from the floor by the break to outpace USC's 26.5 percent first-half effort. The Trojans had held the Pac-12's top scorer Sabrina Ionescu scoreless in the first quarter, but the Oregon sophomore finally connected in the second, scoring seven points to help give the Ducks a boost back into the lead. USC had two players in double digits by halftime, with Aliyah Mazyck holding 12 first-half points and Minyon Moore adding 10 for the Trojan cause in those first 20 minutes of action.
Both teams heated up in the second half, with Oregon closing things down shooting 46.9 percent from the floor and hitting nine 3-pointers while going 15-of-17 from the free-throw line. USC finished up at 38.7 percent from the floor, nailing seven threes and going 11-of-13 from the stripe. Oregon outrebounded the Trojans 35-29. Both teams had four players finish in double figures. Aliyah Mazyck tallied a game-high 21 points to pace the Trojans, joined by Kristen Simon (18 points), Minyon Moore (16 points) and Sadie Edwards (11 points) in double figures. Moore also issued seven assists and made six steals for the Trojan cause. Oregon was led by 18 points from Maite Cazorla, who matched Mazyck with four 3-pointers on the night. Sabrina Ionescu finished with 16 points — nine from the free-throw line — while Lexi Bando added 12 and Ruthy Hebard had 11 for the Ducks. The Trojan defense forced a whopping 20 turnovers out of Oregon, while USC committed just nine of their own.
After an early tug-of-war that saw USC's top scorer Kristen Simon get tagged with two fouls, USC stoked up a 6-0 rally to lead it 12-7 at 2:09 on a string of scores from Aliyah Mazyck, two of which were keyed by steals from Sadie Edwards. In the final minute of the first, Minyon Moore nabbed a steal and got herself to the free-throw line to expand the USC advantage to 14-7 with 24 second left in the frame. Edwards would have the last word, delivering a block on the Ducks' last-ditch shot to close the quarter. In the second, Oregon reeled in the Trojans as Sabrina Ionescu delivered her first points of the night with a visit to the line and then a 3-pointer landed, making it a one-point game. Moore responded with a take to the hoop to get it to a 24-21 advantage with 4:15 on the clock, but Oregon nailed a three next to equalize, then got two more tosses from Ionescu to maneuver ahead 26-24 at 2:25. Oregon would stage a rally next, however, netting an 8-0 run to lead it 29-24 at halftime.
In the third, Oregon built out a 10-point lead, only to see the Trojans fire back. Back in the game after early foul trouble, Kristen Simon converted down low and then Mazyck landed her second three to follow an Oregon bucket, making it a 47-43 margin with 1:10 left in the frame. Oregon planted three straight free throws next after getting fouled on a 3-point try, but Simon kept coming, striking again in the paint to hit double digits for the 13th time this season. That made it a 50-45 Oregon, although the Ducks would get to the hoop before the buzzer to lead it 52-45 entering the fourth. With Moore interrupting the Oregon offense, USC cut down the Oregon lead once again. Mazyck landed another three before Moore dropped in two more free throws, making it a 54-50 margin with 7:30 on the clock. In the next stretch, Simon knocked down a baseline three, then converted in the paint, and all of a sudden it was a one-point game with Oregon holding a 56-55 edge at 6:00. It was still a one-point game coming out of the final media timeout at 3:52, then tied up even at 62-62 at 1:50 after a take to the hoop from Edwards. Oregon would land a three for a little room, but Simon struck again to get to within one once more. With 1:00 to go, Oregon was up three — 67-64 — and USC was unable to land the equalizer on its next possession. The Ducks were sent to the stripe with 21 ticks to go, planting both to move ahead 69-64 and put the Trojans in a tough spot. Moore was sent to the line and landed both, putting it at 69-66 Oregon with 9 seconds left. The Ducks hit the front end of their next visit, and it was 70-66 Oregon with 7 seconds on the clock. Coming out of the timeout, USC misfired on a 3-point try, and the buzzer sounded before the Trojans were able to take another last-ditch shot to lead Oregon with the win.
USC now turns to take on No. 16 Oregon State in a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday (Jan. 7) at Galen Center.
