Ruffels Career-Best 66 Leads Trojans To Within Shot Of First At Windy City Collegiate
October 01, 2018 | Women's Golf, Features
Sophomore leads field at 9-under, freshman Nam tied for eighth.
Sophomore Gabriela Ruffels fired a career best 6-under 66 in the second of two rounds today at the Windy City Collegiate at the Westmoreland C.C. in Wilmette, Ill., taking the individual lead at 9-under while leading the Trojans to within a stroke of first on Monday (Oct. 1).
Â
The Trojans combined for a par 576 (286-290), one back of defending national champion Arizona and one ahead of fellow Pac-12 foe ASU.
Â
Ruffels' best effort as a freshman was 70, but she bested that twice today en route to a 9-under 135 (69-66), one ahead of ASU's Raquel Olmos, who aced the 13th hole today.
Â
The Aussie caught fire in the second round, opening with a 5-under front 9 with four birdies between the fifth and ninth holes. She repeated the stretch on the back 9 with four birdies between 13 and 17 before a double bogey on 18 kept her honest.
Â
Ruffels' first round saw her birdie five holes against two bogeys. She birdied twice on holes 5, 8, 15 and 17.
Â
Freshman Malia Nam, coming off her 12-under, second-place debut in her first career collegiate event, is tied for eighth after 36 holes at 1-under 143 (68-73). Her first round – which featured seven birdies and four in a row between 5 and 8 -- gave her four straight rounds in the 60s to start her Trojan career. Only four Trojans have ever had eight or more rounds in the 60s in a season.
Â
"This is an extremely difficult golf course from tee to green which makes Gabi's two rounds and Malia's first round incredibly good performances," USC Coach Justin Silverstein said. "We are happy to be right in the mix headed into tomorrow and hopefully the depth of our lineup will be the difference at the end of the tournament."
Â
Said Ruffels on her personal best effort: "It was pretty good out there today. I think my putting was definitely the difference in the second round."
Â
Freshman Jennifer Chang, riding a streak of eight straight top 15 finishes, is just outside that after two rounds today, tied for 16th at 1-over 144 (73-72). She had one bogey and 17 pars in the first round and used three second-round birdies to stay even in the second go-around.
Â
Junior Allisen Corpuz is tied for 47th at 9-over 153 (76-77) while junior Aiko Leong is tied for 62nd at 14-over 158 (78-80).
Â
USC will tee off at 7 a.m. PT with the Wildcats and Sun Devils in Tuesday's final round.
