Successful First Day For USC Men At ITA Regionals

MALIBU, CALIF. — The USC men's tennis team had a power push through the first day of action at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships in Malibu, with all four doubles duos and six of eight singles players ringing up opening wins to advance to tomorrow's competition at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.

It was straight-set victories for six Trojans, as Tanner Smith, Jake DeVine, Riley Smith, Daniel Cukierman, Logan Smith and Bradley Frye each made quick work of their Round of 64 opponents. Freshman Jake Sands, meanwhile, gutted out a three-set win to join that crew in tomorrow's Round of 32.

In doubles, USC saw a clean sweep for its four pairs in the draw. Top seeds Brandon Holt and Riley Smith dispatched their San Diego State opponents 8-5, while No. 5 seeded Daniel Cukierman and Tanner Smith pinned up a decisive 8-2 win in their Round of 32 matchup. USC's fresh pairing also were victorious today. Freshman Bradley Frye and senior Laurens Verboven dished out an 8-4 win to advance. Senior Jack Jaede and freshman Jake Sands had a harder path, but still stuck to their guns for an 8-7 (6) breaker win to make it a perfect doubles outing for the Trojans today in Malibu.
