Near-Perfect Day Pushes A Pile Of Trojans Into ITA Regional Quarterfinals

Five Trojans are in the singles quarterfinals, three doubles duos also advance.
MALIBU, CALIF. — The USC men's tennis team combined forces for a 13-3 overall record in individual action today at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, winning 10 singles matches and three doubles matches to secure a powerful Trojan contingent in tomorrow's quarterfinal rounds in Malibu, Calif.
Of the four USC doubles pairs engaged in Round of 16 competition today, three Trojan duos pinned up identical 8-6 victories to push through to the quarterfinals. The veteran pairing of junior Brandon Holt and Riley Smith — the top seeds in the bracket — got through a UC Santa Barbara team to lock up a place in tomorrow's quarterfinals. So, too, did the freshman-senior pairing of Bradley Frye and Laurens Verboven, moving that Trojan duo in a matchup against the draw's No. 3 seeded team tomorrow. Meanwhile, sophomore Daniel Cukierman and senior Tanner Smith matched their teammates' 8-6 scoreline over a team from San Diego to advance as well.
On the singles scene, five Trojans gathered up two wins apiece to punch tickets to the quarterfinals. Tanner Smith was arguably the biggest winner on the day, upsetting top-seeded Keegan Smith of UCLA — Smith's own cousin — in a decisive 6-1, 6-3 decision to build momentum toward a three-set win in the Round of 16 that secured the eldest Smith's spot in tomorrow's quarterfinals. There, he'll have to face his own teammate, as redshirt junior Jake DeVine also nabbed two wins today to maneuver into a quarterfinal matchup against Smith.
The other three Trojan winners won't have to face a teammate tomorrow. No. 4 seeded Daniel Cukierman — winner of two solid straight-set decisions today — goes up against UC Santa Barbara's Joseph Guillin in the quarterfinals tomorrow. No. 6 seeded senior Logan Smith, who claimed two somewhat tighter straight-set matches today, squares against another Gaucho in No. 3 seed Nicolas Moreno de Alboran. Freshman Jake Sands, meanwhile, also muscled his way through straight-set victories today, earning him a quarterfinal spot against San Diego's August Holmgren.
