Singles And Doubles Semis Ahead For Trojans At ITA Southwest Regional

MALIBU, CALIF. — The USC men's tennis team has scored a set of semifinal slots at the ITA Southwest Regionals, with two Trojans lined up for singles semis and one doubles pair on through in that draw. Redshirt senior Tanner Smith had to edge out teammate Jake DeVine in today's quarterfinals with some friendly fire that sent Smith on to the semis. Logan Smith, too, is through to the singles semis after an upset win for the senior. Meanwhile, in doubles, top-seeded Brandon Holt and Riley Smith are also in reach of a final in securing a semifinal place in in the doubles draw. All the semifinal action is set for tomorrow (Oct. 21) at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu.

USC had five Trojans in today's singles quarterfinals. As noted, there was one all-Trojan matchup on the docket, with the elder Tanner Smith edging out teammate DeVine 6-4, 7-6 (4) to take his place in the semifinals. Sophomore Daniel Cukierman, meanwhile, was upended by UC Santa Barbara's Joseph Guillin in his quarterfinal bout. So, too, did freshman Jake Sands see his ITA Regional debut come to a close in the quarters as he fell to San Diego's August Holmgren. Senior Logan Smith made a statement in his quarterfinal matchup, upsetting #32 Nicolas Moreno de Alboran with a 7-5, 6-1 decision to make his move into the semis.

In the doubles realm, USC had three teams in today's quarterfinals. Two Trojan duos would tumble, as #40 Daniel Cukierman and Riley Smith fell to the No. 4 seeded pair from San Diego. Freshman-senior combo Bradley Frye and Laurens Verboven also were knocked out by higher seeds, as UCSB's No. 3 seeded team took down the Trojans. The mighty top seeds — Brandon Holt and Riley Smith — held their ground today, beating UCLA's Pereira/Smith 8-6 to step into tomorrow's semis.
