All-Trojan Singles Final Set: ITA Regional Title Goes On The Line At Marks Stadium

MALIBU, CALIF. — USC men's tennis is assured a crown tomorrow, with two Trojans doing battle for the ITA Southwest Regional singles championship after heroic three-set victories in today's semifinals in Malibu. Redshirt senior Tanner Smith and senior Logan Smith both gutted out wins to make it an all-Trojan title match tomorrow. The match will be played at USC's Mark Stadium tomorrow (Oct. 22) at 12:30 p.m.

After dropping the first set in his semifinal bout with UC Santa Barbara's Joseph Guillin, Tanner Smith regrouped with a vengeance. The redshirt senior captain took control from there, tacking up a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 comeback effort that punched his ticket to the singles final. He's already had to square off against another USC teammate during this ITA Southwest Regional, having topped USC redshirt junior Jake DeVine in the quarterfinals.

At the other end of the singles bracket, senior Logan Smith was up against San Diego's August Holmgren in today's semifinal bout. After winning the first set in a tight battle, Smith saw Holmgren counter by taking the second. But in the third, Smith dug in and made a stand, putting forth a powerful effort in that final set to claim a 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 victory that gets him a spot in tomorrow's final.

In doubles play, USC's top-seeded Brandon Holt and Riley Smith took their first loss of the year after San Diego's No. 4 seeded team of Gamerov/Holmgren fought back and snagged the ticket to the title match. In today's semifinals, the Trojans grabbed the first set, but the Toreros forced the issue by nabbing the second to bring up a 10-point tiebreaker to decide things. There, it was Gamerov/Holmgren who caught the edge they needed to claim a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (12-10) victory over the Trojans.
