Logan Smith Wins ITA Southwest Singles Crown In All-Trojan Title Match

Logan Smith tops teammate Tanner Smith to claim USC’s first title since 2013.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — USC's veterans Logan Smith and Tanner Smith played out the ITA Southwest Regional Championship bout on home turf today, switching venues from event host Pepperdine to USC's own Marks Stadium for the all-Trojan singles final. As finalists, both had secured a place in the coming Oracle ITA National Fall Championships next month. After a three-set battle ensued, it was senior Logan Smith who reigned supreme as the champion today, topping teammate and redshirt senior Tanner Smith with a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (1) decision at Marks Stadium.
Logan had the early advantage over his elder teammate Tanner, claiming the first set 6-2. In the second, Tanner would close the gap, having trailed 3-0 before a rally to lock things up 4-4 and then again at 5-5. Tanner would press on and force a third set, making another surge to take the second set 7-5. In the third, Logan manufactured a 3-0 lead once again. Each Trojan would stand their ground from the service line for the next stretch before Tanner broke Logan to cut the margin down to 5-4. Again, the Trojan teammates dug back in, holding serve to stand level at 6-6 and bring up the deciding tiebreaker. In the breaker, Logan was the victor, turning an early 1-1 lockup into a run to the title, taking the match with a final 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (1) decision.
For the senior, the ITA Southwest Regional title caps off a string of solid runs by Logan at the event. A finalist as a freshman, Logan reached the semifinals in 2018 and the quarterfinals last season. He's the first USC singles champ at the tournament since Yannick Hanfmann won it all in 2013.
Next up for the Trojans is another stint on their home courts. The 2018 Southern California Intercollegiate Championships will play out at Marks Stadium from Oct. 26-28.
