Cukierman And Smith Move On In ITA All-American Main Draw

TULSA, OKLA. — Daniel Cukierman and Tanner Smith teamed up for another notable win in Tulsa today, topping the No. 9 pair in the land to kick off the main draw with a big victory in order to advance at the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships. In singles play, No. 31 Cukierman also rang up a win, moving on to tomorrow's Round of 32 while pairing with Smith for a Round of 16 doubles appointment.

Sophomore Cukierman was all business as the No. 31 Trojan faced Southern Alabama's No. 122 Clement Marzol, taking down his Round of 64 singles foe with a 6-0, 7-5 decision to move on. He'll face Tulsa's No. 39 Majed Kilani tomorrow (Oct. 5) in a 10:30 a.m. CT Round of 32 matchup. Meanwhile, redshirt junior Jake DeVine's impressive run in Tulsa came to a close. After pinning up seven straight wins to advance from pre-qualifying to qualifying and on to the main draw, DeVine was finally on the losing end of a three-setter. He had won his previous five matches in three sets, but this one was claimed by a highly ranked opponent in No. 12 Mitch Harper. Harper held off the upset-minded DeVine for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 decision.

In doubles, Cukierman and redshirt senior Smith squared off against No. 9 Ortiz/Osama of Alabama in the opening Round of 32. Cukierman/Smith had made a successful run through qualifying to get into the main draw, and the Trojan duo kept rolling in serving up an upset of Ortiz/Osama. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, Cukierman/Smith forced the issue in taking the second to bring up a 10-point tiebreaker to decide things, There, the Trojans held their ground for a 10-6 decision that pushed the pair on through to tomorrow's doubles Round of 16.
