Trojans Pull Away Late to Beat CSU Baskersfield, 90-75

LOS ANGELES — Jordan Usher scored a career-high 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds as USC used a late surge to defeat CSU Bakersfield, 90-75, on Sunday.
Bennie Boatwright, who made his first start of the season after Kevin Porter Jr. was sidelined with a quadriceps injury, added 19 points and recorded eight rebounds.
USC (4-2) shot well — 55.8 percent from the field and were 10-of-22 from the perimeter — but struggled to contained CSU Bakersfield's offense early.
The Roadrunners (3-3) challenged the Trojans for most of the game and went into halftime with a 46-44 lead. CSU Bakersfield led by as many as seven points in the 11:30 mark in the second-half before exploding on a 26-5 run.
USC held CSU Bakersfield to 29 points on 30.3 percent shooting in the second half. The Trojans avoided being in the penalty in the second half and committed six fewer fouls than they did in the first.
"It was a challenging game for us," said USC coach Andy Enfield. "Give Bakersfield credit. They came out strong and shot the ball at a terrific rate. We ramped up our defense and forced some missed shots."
Usher's career-high came at a pivotal time when USC lacked depth. Elijah Weaver made his first career start at point guard with the Trojans losing another starter in Derryck Thornton (right ankle sprain), the team's leader in assists.
"We were shorthanded," Usher said. "I just waited for my opportunity. It was just my night. When the ball has energy, it's just hard to miss."
Damiyrne Durham finished with 22 points for Cal State Bakersfield.
INJURY UPDATE
Enfield said Porter and Thornton's injuries are "day-to-day" and will be monitored throughout the week.
