Issei Tanabe leads Trojans with final round 66, finishes second overall.
Sophomore Issei Tanabe fired a collegiate best 6-under 65 to lead four Trojans who were 4-under or better today as the No. 5 USC men's golf team used its best round in over 13 years to turn a 17-stroke deficit into an eight-stroke victory at the Saint Mary's Invitational at Poppy Hills G.C. in Pebble Beach, Calif., on Wednesday (Nov. 7).
Â
The Trojans, who wrapped fall play today with their second straight win, won at 21-under 831 (290-276-265) to leapfrog BYU, Arizona and Pepperdine today. BYU led the Trojans by 17 strokes when the day started and by double digits at the turn, but USC flipped the script over the back half of the round to win going away.
Â
Tanabe finished a career best second at 8-under 205 (72-68-65) for his second straight top 4 finish. He had seven birdies against just one bogey today and now has five rounds under 70 in nine starts.
Â
"It was an incredible day for the team," USC Head Coach Chris Zambri said. "The guys played solidly yesterday to give us a chance. Today was just about perfect. It's great to see Issei lead this team. I'm so proud of him. He's worked hard and he deserves days like these."
Â
Said Tanabe: "Without perseverance, we couldn't have done it."
Â
USC's 265 was its best round since the Trojans fired the same score at Waikoloa Village G.C. on Feb. 9, 2005, on a par 72 course and no Trojan team has gone lower since at least 1994.
Â
Junior Kyle Suppa tied for fourth at 5-under 208 (73-68-67) while sophomore Kaito Onishi joined him in the top 10 with a tie for ninth at 3-under 210 (73-71-66), the second top 10 finish for both Trojans this fall. Suppa had four birdies and an eagle today while Onishi had three birdies and an eagle without any bogeys.
Â
"It was an incredible team win," Suppa said. "Making a 17-shot comeback takes great play by everyone on the team so I think it shows the confidence that we have in ourselves and each other that we were able to accomplish that."
Â
Senior Justin Suh tied for 15th at 1-under 212 (75-70-67), shaking off a rare off round Monday to close at 5-under over the final 36 holes, posting five birdies today for his fourth top 15 this fall.
Â
"I'm so proud of the team," Suh said. "Everyone fought hard until the end and it shows how much it meant to all of us to get the win here."
Â
Junior Cheng Jin tied for 24th at 2-over 215 (72-70-73) while freshman Charlie Reiter, playing individually, tied for 30th at 3-over 216 (74-68-74).
Â
USC is off until traveling to, coincidentally, Waikoloa, Hawaii, to play in the Amer Ari Invitational from Feb. 7-9.
