The two Women of Troy are part of a 26-player roster that will represent the USA at the Spring Premiere in late January
SPARKS, Md. – USC All-American junior midfielder Kerrigan Miller (Bayport, N.Y.) and former all-league goalie Gussie Johns (Washington, D.C.) were each named to the 2019 U.S. Lacrosse Women's Senior National Training Team on Wednesday, Dec. 5.
U.S. senior team head coach Jenny Levy announced the 26-player roster that will represent the United States in competition at the Spring Premiere at Stanford University from Jan. 25-27, where the Women's National Team will open its 2019 playing schedule.
The event will feature six teams, including both the U.S. senior and U19 teams, along with squads from England, Japan, Fresno State, and Stanford. The complete schedule and ticket information will be announced soon.
The U.S. roster features 11 former World Cup champions, including three-time Tewaaraton winner Taylor Cummings and two-time Tewaaraton winner Katie Haus out of Maryland, and eight current collegiate players, led by 2018 Tewaaraton winner Sam Apuzzo (Boston College).
Two players with strong California connections are competing for the senior team as well. Defender Kristen Carr, a two-time World Cup champion (North Carolina), is currently an assistant coach at Stanford, whose head coach, Amy Bokker, helped the U.S. team win a pair of gold medals as an assistant coach. Miller, a junior with the Women of Troy, was a member of the 2015 U.S. U19 team and will be playing in her first U.S. competition since helping the U.S. win the silver medal that summer.
Miller will be joined by another player returning to the U.S. fold, attacker Katrina Dowd. Dowd, who helped Northwestern win three national championships, was the leading goal scorer for the 2013 U.S. senior team when she earned all-world honors. Dowd, an assistant coach for Canada at the 2017 World Cup, is back at North Carolina as associate head coach after serving as head coach at Oregon the last two seasons.
Johns graduated from USC in May following a four-year career in which she started all but one game for the Trojans. Last summer, she was part of the U.S. National Team roster that won gold at the 2017 FIL World Cup in England and played every single minute for the U.S. when it claimed the gold medal at the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw, Poland.
USC finished the 2018 season with a 10-8 overall record and advanced to the semifinals of the inaugural Pac-12 tournament where it fell to champion Stanford in a narrow 15-14 defeat. The Women of Troy were 6-4 to finish third in the league's regular-season standings. Head coach Lindsey Munday improved to 79-38 (.675) through her sixth completed season. Miller capped her sophomore year as the Pac-12's Midfielder of the Year and received IWLCA All-America third-team honors.
