Suh, Onishi Lead No. 15 USC In Amer Ari Invitational First Round

Trojans 6-under after 18 holes, three off the lead.
Junior Justin Suh and freshman Kaito Onishi both fired 3-under 69s while sophomore Cheng Jin carded a 2-under 70 to lead the No. 15 USC men's golf team during the first round of the Amer Ari Invitational at the Waikoloa Kings' Course in Waikoloa, Hawaii, on Thursday (Feb. 1).
The Trojans, in their first action of the spring season, finished the first round of the 18-team field tied for sixth at 6-under 282, three back of first-place Texas and two back of Oklahoma State.
Suh, the NCAA's No. 1-ranked player, registered his fifth straight round under 70 dating back to fall play and his 10th on the season in 13 rounds. Suh has only been above par in one round this season.
Suh, who had five birdies on the day, is three off the lead, tied for seventh with Onishi, who finished with his third straight round under 70. The freshman had five of his own birdies as well.
Jin is tied for 17th at 2-under 70 after his six-birdie round, which ties for his second lowest round of the season.
Freshman Issei Tanabe is tied for 65th at 2-over 74 after a four-birdie round while sophomore Kyle Suppa is tied for 75th at 3-over 75. Junior Sam Kim, playing individually, is also tied for 75th.
Action continues Friday and Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. each day.
