No. 7 BYU Men's Volleyball Defeats No. 14 USC

Trojans fall in 4 sets.
Brenden Sander had 23 kills and 5 aces to lead the No. 7-ranked BYU men's volleyball team to a 25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 27-25 win over No. 14 USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday (Feb. 10) at USC's Galen Center.
The Cougars improved to 8-4 overall while winning their MPSF opener. USC fell to 4-8 overall and 1-1 in the MPSF.
Ryan Moss led USC with 16 kills while hitting .394, while Jack Wyett added 12 kills and Gianluca Grasso had 9 kills and 3 aces.
Gabi Garcia Fernandez added 18 kills (hitting .441) for BYU, Storm Fa'agata-Tufuga came off the bench to get 9 kills while hitting .615 and Price Jarman had 7 kills and 5 blocks.
BYU hit .372 to USC's .321 and the Cougars had more blocks (10.0 to 5.5), aces (9 to 5) and digs (38 to 30).
USC moved out to a 14-10 lead in the first set, but BYU went up 19-18 before the Trojans scored 3 in a row to go up 21-19, however the Cougars scored the set's final 3 points while hitting .379 and getting 12 digs and 3.5 blocks. USC had a 17-12 lead in the second set, but BYU tied it at 19-19 before the Trojans restored order by scoring the next 4 points and then captured the set (Troy served 4 aces in the set). BYU held a 16-12 lead in the third set before USC caught up at 17-17, then the Cougars went back up 23-21 only to see the Trojans tie it at 23-23 before BYU scored the last 2 points. USC fought back from a 20-14 deficit in the fourth set to tie it at 21-21 and again the Trojans caught up from a 24-22 deficit before falling in extra time.
USC next travels across town to face No. 2 UCLA on Wednesday (Feb. 14) at 7 p.m. PT in an MPSF match that will be shown live on Pac-12 Los Angeles.
