USC Ninth After First Round Of The Prestige At PGA West
February 20, 2018 | Men's Golf, Features
Final round set for Wednesday.
Junior Justin Suh carded a par 71 while sophomore Cheng Jin registered a 1-over 72 to lead the USC men's golf team during the first round of The Prestige at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif., on Tuesday (Feb. 20).
A day after high winds forced the cancellation of the first round, the Trojans combined for a 12-over 296 to finish ninth, 13 back of Oregon and Oklahoma State in the 16-team field.
Suh's hot streak of seven straight rounds under 70 came to an end, but thanks to a 2-under back 9, he managed to extend his run of par or better rounds to 13 with his 71, which is four stroke back of first.
Jin is tied for 17th with his 1-over, the sophomore posting late birdies on 15 and 16 to move inside the top 20.
Junior Sam Kim is tied for 34th at 3-over 74, managing a 2-under back 9, including three birdies over the final seven holes. Freshman Issei Tanabe, playing individually, is tied for 43rd at 4-over 75.
Sophomore Kyle Suppa is tied for 73rd at 8-over 79 while freshman Kaito Onishi, who had a streak of five straight rounds under 70, is 81st at 11-over 82.
USC will again tee off at 7:30 a.m. in the final round of the event on Tuesday (Feb. 20).
