No. 10 USC Wins Bruin Wave Invitational For Third Victory Of Season
February 27, 2018 | Women's Golf, Features
Freshman Jennifer Chang takes third, leads three Trojans in top 7.
Freshman Jennifer Chang and sophomore Allisen Corpuz each turned in their second top 4 finish in a row while freshman Gabi Ruffels registered her first top 10 to lead the No. 10 USC women's golf team to their first spring win and third of the season on the final day of the Bruin Wave Invitational at the San Luis Obispo (Calif.) C.C. on Tuesday (Feb. 27).
Â
USC, featuring a lineup of three freshmen, two sophomores and just one golfer on the roster last season, finished first at 32-over 896 (300-298-298), eight strokes better than No. 1 UCLA (40-over 904) and 10 better than No. 4 Stanford (42-over 906).
Â
The Trojans took the tournament title for the fourth time in the nine-year history of the event after wins in 2010, 2013 and 2014. Â This is USC's 33rd win (including ties for first) since the start of the 2012-13 season. The Trojans have won at least three tournaments in six straight seasons.
Â
"We're pretty excited," USC Coach Andrea Gaston said. "This young team is really special and they just played their hearts out. It was a really difficult course with really difficult greens that required a lot of patience. You couldn't let up on the round. You had to stay focused on each and every shot.
Â
"This was our third tournament in three weeks. It was a test for this young team and with a second place last week and a win today, I'm very proud of them."
Â
Chang, who tied for 2nd last week at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate, finished third today at 6-over 222 (76-71-75) while Corpuz tied for fourth for the second straight week at 8-over 224 (73-77-74).
Â
Said Chang: "We were prepared knowing that the conditions were going to be tough. The first two tournaments have helped us to be more patient in difficult weather. I'm so proud of my team to be able to pull through on such a demanding course. Especially since we are such a young team, we've put in a lot of hard work and it's great to see it pay off."
Ruffels, like Chang playing her third tournament for the Trojans since joining the team in January, posted a USC best tie for seventh at 10-over 226 (76-75-75). Freshman Alyaa Abdulghany tied for 16th at 13-over 229 (80-75-74), her fourth top 17 finish this season, and sophomore transfer Aiko Leong, in her first event as a Trojan, tied for 27th at 17-over 233 (75-77-81).
Â
USC is off for a month before resuming the spring season at the SDSU March Mayhem in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., March 26-28.
