No. 8 UCLA Works Out Ahead of USC Women In Second Straight Crosstown Showdown
February 05, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Up against the Bruins for the second time in four days, the Trojans take a loss on home turf.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team saw all eight Trojans who hit the floor tonight score points as USC trimmed a once 13-point UCLA lead down to one point in the fourth quarter. But after two veterans fouled out in the fourth, the Trojans were unable to hit a bucket from the floor in the final 6:39 and wound up with an 84-70 loss to No. 8 crosstown rival. The loss puts USC a 15-8 overall and 5-7 in Pac-12 play, while UCLA claims its eighth straight win to improve to 19-4, 5-7.
USC shot 32.4 percent in the first half but again had to contend with the accuracy of the Bruins, who hit at a 47 percent clip through the first 20 minutes to build out a 44-33 halftime lead over the Trojans. Both teams picked up the pace in the third as USC trimmed down the deficit in outscoring the Bruins 23-17 in that frame, but USC's output dipped again in the fourth as UCLA maneuvered out ahead. The Trojans finished up the game shooting 34.4 percent from the floor, going 9-of-25 from 3-point range and 17-of-23 from the free-throw line. The Bruins shot 46.3 from the floor, 7-of-17 from beyond the arc and 27-of-35 from the stripe. UCLA outrebounded USC 47-28, but the Trojans forced 14 turnovers out of the Bruins while committing just nine of their own.
USC received a game-high 21 points from Aliyah Mazyck, who moved into the No. 9 all-time spot in career 3-pointers with four more nailed tonight to up her career count to 110. Also having a career day was USC's Minyon Moore, who recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 assists. Kristen Simon also hit double figures for the 10th straight game in finishing with 12 on the night in 16 minutes of work. That included a 2-for-2 effort from 3-point range. UCLA had four players finish in double digits, as Monique Billings and Jordin Canada had 18 apiece, with Billings notching a double-double with 11 rebounds. Lajahna Drummer also had a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards, while Kelli Hayes had 10 points for the Bruins.
Once again, UCLA had the hot hand out of the gates, pinning up a 9-0 lead in Trojan territory before Marguerite Effa converted a three-point play to snap the run with 6:04 on the clock. Aliyah Mazyck would land a pair of 3-pointers in a minute's span, and later Jordan Adams landed one of her own to follow a take from Minyon Moore to get USC within three, down 21-18 with 1:50 to go in the first. After Effa landed two more free throws, UCLA got its fourth 3-pointer of the quarter to go, leaving it as a 26-20 Bruin lead after 10 minutes of action. In the next stretch, USC was able to carve down the Bruin advantage and make it a three-point margin on two occasions on the hands of Mazyck. It was 28-25 UCLA as Mazyck worked her way into double figures, but the Bruins fired back and later followed Ja'Tavia Tapley three with a 6-0 run to pad back the UCLA lead. After a Bruin bucked in the final minute, UCLA gripped a 44-33 lead at halftime.
Back on the court after just three minutes of action due to foul trouble in the first half, Kristen Simon earned a trip to the line at a 5-minute mark and drained both for her first points of the night, making it 50-40 UCLA. Moore would help USC snip away at the Bruins' lead, which had grown to 13 with 4:30 on the clock. Moore drained a three, then nabbed a steal and delivered her eighth assist of the night in finding Tapley on the break. Later, Moore assisted on a Simon score down low and finished off her own next to get the score to 57-50 with 2:05 left in the third. With the last possession of the quarter, USC set up Simon for the shot at the top of the arc and the senior landed the three to make it a 61-56 score. Moore had the assist on that one, too, giving the sophomore her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 assists to her name entering the fourth.
Simon would work her way into double digits with a bucket and then a 3-pointer — her second of the game and her 10th straight game in double figures — but soon after was tagged for her fourth and fifth fouls. UCLA, meanwhile, had landed back-to-back threes, gripping a 68-61 lead with 7:30 on the clock. A minute later, Mazyck splashed in her fourth three of the night, lifting her up to No. 9 all-time in career threes made at USC and getting the Trojans within three, down 68-65 at 6:35. Less than a minute after that, Effa stood tall at the stripe and sank a pair, getting it to a two-point margin at 69-67 UCLA with 5:40 on the clock. A free throw from Moore would trim it to a one-point game, only to see the Bruins mount a 10-0 rally to pad out a 79-68 lead with 2:15 to go while the foul count tipped further against the Trojans. Adams would foul out during that UCLA rally, in which the Bruins went 6-for-6 from the stripe. Mazyck got two free throws to go to snap the run, but USC continued to struggle from the floor as its cold snap extended through to the end, unable to score a bucket for the final 6:49 of play while UCLA made its push to victory.
USC's busy week includes two more Pac-12 contests, with a Friday (Feb. 9) matchup against No. 25 Arizona State set for 7 p.m. Then, the Trojans host Arizona in a 1 p.m. tilt on Sunday (Feb. 11).
