March 10, 2018 | Women's Tennis, Features
The No. 47 Women of Troy lost to the No. 46 Stanford Cardinal on Saturday (March 10) 4-0 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif. This is the second sweep of the Trojans in the 2018 season as the team entered Pac-12 Conference play. The first also occurred in the Bay Area as California defeated USC 7-0 on March 9.
With the loss, the Trojans are now 7-4 on the season and 0-2 in conference.
Doubles kicked off the morning and the Cardinal struck first. Stanford's Arbuthnott/Gordon defeated USC's No. 43 Angela Kulikov/Rianna Valdes 6-2 on court one. On court three, Trojan pair Branstine/Westby fell 6-3 to the Cardinal duo Hiuchi/Shin. The win on court three claimed the doubles point for Stanford, and USC entered singles at a one-point deficit.
The Cardinal continued to roll with their built-up momentum from doubles as Janice Shin beat USC's Madison Westby on court four 6-1, 6-1. On court one, Stanford's No. 17 Michaela Gordon defeated USC's highest ranked singles player No. 37 Gabby Smith 6-1, 6-2. Stanford's Kimberly Yee would have the final word for the Cardinal as she beat USC's Alexa Corcoleotes 6-3, 6-1 to clinch the match.
Due to the possibility of rain, the remaining matches were suspended.
USC's next action brings them back to Mark's Stadium where they will challenge Oregon on March 16. The following evening (March 17), the Women of Troy will travel to the desert where they will compete against Baylor at the Oracle BNP Collegiate Tournament in Indian Wells, Calif.
