Women of Troy Defeat the Ducks
March 16, 2018 | Women's Tennis, Features
The USC women's tennis team defeated No. 20 Oregon 4-3 to mark their first Top-20 team win of the dual season on Friday (March 16) in Marks Stadium. With the victory, the Trojans are now 8-4 overall and 1-2 in conference.
"This was a really exciting win for us," said head coach Alison Swain. "I'm really proud of how the girls bounced back from our trip up to NorCal last weekend. We asked everybody to give a little bit more, and the girls did just that. We really competed as a team today. Everyone played hard and was focused, and it showed in the win."
USC lit up the courts to kick off doubles. At one point, all three Trojan courts were leading 4-0. USC's Angela Kulikov/Rianna Valdes finished their match with a 6-0 shutout of their Duck opponents Eshet/Sangwan.
Courts two and three were neck in neck, but Trojan tandem Constance Branstine/Madison Westby reached the finish line first as they clinched the doubles point with their 6-1 win over Oregon's Rose/Wagner on court three.
The Trojans entered singles with a 1-0 advantage.
Gabby Smith rolled the Trojan momentum from doubles into singles as she breezed through her match to defeat Oregon's Alyssa Tobita 6-2, 6-1 on court one. Duck Julia Lilien notched a point on the board for Oregon with her 6-1, 6-4 win over USC's Angela Kuikov on court four.
Oregon's Paiton Wagner tied up the match at 2-2 as she beat USC's Constance Branstine 6-1, 7-6 (3) on court six.
On court two, Becca Weissmann forged ahead for the Women of Troy by defeating Oregon's Julia Eshet 6-1, 6-4.
The attention turned to court two where Rianna Valdes was entrenched in battle with Oregon's Shweta Sangwan. After winning a close first set 7-6 (5), Valdes powered through to win the second set 6-3 and clinch the match for USC.
Although the match was clinched, court six continued to play and Madison Westby eventually fell to Oregon's Daniela Nasser 7-6 (3), 7-5.
The Trojans head to the desert tomorrow (March 17) where they will take on Baylor at 8 p.m. in Indian Wells, Calif. at the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge presented by Oracle.
