Trojans also claim tournament title for third year in a row.
The No. 7 USC women's golf team completing three days of strong play with a 5-0 win over No. 6 Texas in the championship final to win its third consecutive title at the SDSU March Mayhem at the Farms G.C. in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., on Wednesday (March 28).
Â
Sophomore Allisen Corpuz and freshmen Alyaa Abdulghany and Jennifer Chang all won 2&1 while freshmen Amelia Garvey and Gabi Ruffels each won 1up.
Â
This is the Trojans' fifth win in the six years of the event and also moves USC's 2017-18 match play record to 5-0. This is also Troy's fourth win this year, marking the fifth season in the last six USC has had at least that many team victories.
Â
"It was an awesome performance to have all 5 ladies win their matches," USC Coach Andrea Gaston said. "It is obviously a huge win for us, beating a number of ranked teams here. There's just something about this course that suits our team and we really enjoy playing here every year.
Â
"To have such a young team that has the maturity to hang tough is impressive. You've got to keep yourself mentally in the game and expect adversity on the course, and even when you're 3 up it can change and you have to be prepared for that and to fight your way back."
Â
Corpuz, who finished first in stroke play with a 4-under 68 on Monday, trailed only briefly today as she won for the third time this week and improved to 4-1 in match play this season. Garvey also won her third match this week despite dropping five straight holes at one point, going from 3up to 2down. She rebounded, however, winning three late holes in a row for the comeback win.
Â
"Amelia had a complete momentum swing," Gaston said. "I told her this could be like the national championships and you'll nave these momentum swings. This is a great way to prepare for that kind of a stage."
Â
Abdulghany never trailed in her match and clinched her win with a half on 18 while Chang also led the entire way, though never by more than two holes. Ruffels trailed briefly at the start but also held a slim lead for most of the match.
Â
USC finished first in the single stroke play round before posting a quarterfinal win over California on Monday and a semifinal win over Northwestern on Tuesday.
