Justin Suh Wins For Fourth Time This Season, Trojans Tie For 2nd In Vegas

Freshmen Kaito Onishi, Issei Tanabe finish with 3-under 69s at Southern Highlands Collegiate.
The NCAA's top-ranked golfer, USC junior Justin Suh, won his fourth event this season at 8-under while freshmen Kaito Onishi and Issei Tanabe closed with third-round 3-under 69s to lead the USC men's golf team during the final day of the Southern Highlands Collegiate in Las Vegas on Wednesday (March 7).

USC made a strong run at its third straight title at the event thanks to a final-round best 8-under 280 before settling for a tie for second with Texas Tech at 1-under 863 (293-290-280). Florida finished first at 5-under 859 while host UNLV was fourth at par 864.

Suh won his fifth collegiate title and fourth this year at 8-under 208 (68-70-70), two shots better than UNLV's Harry Hall. He was 1-under going out with two birdies and 1-under coming in with an eagle on the par 4 14th.

The junior from San Jose, Calif., who now has 16 rounds under par in 20 outings this year and has 19 rounds of par or better, posted his fifth top 2 finish, sixth top 4 and seventh top 9 in as many tries this year. It was also his 12th straight top 20 finish dating back to last year, 10 of which have been inside the top 9 and 11 in the top 11.

Suh's four wins this year are the most at USC in a season since Jamie Lovemark won four in his 2007 freshman season that saw him capture the Pac-12 and NCAA titles.

Freshman Kaito Onishi (78-71-69) and sophomore Cheng Jin (70-76-72) tied for 20th at 2-over 218. Onishi, in his fifth top 28 result this season, turned in his sixth round under 70 this year today thanks to five birdies against two bogeys. It was a season-high finish for Jin.

Freshman Issei Tanabe tied for 28th – a season-best effort -- at 3-over 219 (77-73-69), tying his season-best with his final round that saw six birdies.
