USC Bounces Back With 12-2 Win Over Arizona
April 14, 2018 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team bounced back in a big way on Saturday afternoon, beating Arizona 12-2 thanks to 14 hits and a strong outing on the mound from Solomon Bates.
Bates took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and tossed 7.0 solid frames to help move USC to 17-13 overall on the season and 6-8 in Pac-12 play. The Wildcats fall to 21-12 overall and 5-6 in conference action with the loss.
The Trojans put up 10 of their runs in the first three innings, breaking the contest open with a six-run third inning. USC sent 11 batters to the plate in the third, getting RBI singles from Dillon Paulson and Stephen Dubb, and a two-run double from Chase Bushor.
Blake Sabol also hit a sacrifice fly in the frame, just one inning after smashing a two-run homer to right. He and Bushor led the Trojans with three RBI on the day. USC got an RBI double from Paulson in the first and Dubb singled in a run as well. The Trojans would tack on two runs in the seventh, responding to the lone two runs scored by Arizona in the sixth inning.
Bates cruised through the first five innings of his start, setting down nine straight batters to start the game and 15 of the first 16 he faced. The Wildcats would load the bases and score twice in the sixth after breaking up the no-hitter, but Bates got a couple of popups to end the frame. He scattered four hits and gave up just the two runs on the day. The junior righty was coming off a start last week in which he gave up just one run on three hits in 7.2 innings of work.
Offensively, USC had eight players hit safely and five different players record multi-hit games. The Trojans' 14 hits marked the fourth time in the last six games that the team has had at least 14 knocks in a contest. USC has raised its team average 15 points in the last six games.
