The No. 10 USC men's tennis team locked down their spot in the Round of 16 as they defeated No. 31 Harvard in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday (May 13) in Marks Stadium in Los Angeles. This victory improves USC's record to 19-8 overall in their 12th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
"Today we had a great match against Harvard where they showed great effort," said USC head coach Peter Smith. "We're really excited about the win. I feel like we played much better today, and we are looking forward to playing at Wake Forest."
The day began with a swift win from court two as No. 9 Trojan duo Jack Jaede/Laurens Verboven defeated Harvard's Jean Thirouin/ Robert Wresinski 6-2. Courts one and three continued to exchange games and both ended up in tiebreak situations. USC's No. 10 tandem of Brandon Holt/Riley Smith won their tiebreak 7-6 (2) on an ace from Smith over Crimson pair Kenny Tao/Logan Weber to secure the doubles point.
USC entered the singles portion of the competition with a one-point advantage.
The duo of Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven stayed hot in singles as they both blasted through their singles matches. Verboven defeated Harvard's Robert Wresinski 6-1, 6-1 on court four to increase USC's lead to 2-0.
A couple minutes after Verboven's win, the attention turned to court three where Jack Jaede took down his Crimson opponent Jean Thirouin 6-0, 6-2 to notch another point for the Trojans.
The remaining four matches all extended to three sets. On court two, USC's No. 74 Daniel Cukierman was locked in a tight first set with Harvard's Andy Zhou. After being down 3-4, Cuckierman battled his way back to win the first set 7-6 (6). Cukierman rolled that momentum into his second set where he sprinted to a 6-1 victory to clinch the match for the Trojans.
This win secured USC's spot in the Round of 16 where they will take on North Carolina in Winston-Salem, N.C. on May 18. USC is 5-0 all-time in their series against the Tar Heels.
