Senior Justin Suh got untracked with his first sub-70 round of the season while sophomore Kaito Onishi posted his second in a row to lead the No. 20 USC men's golf team to the second-best round of the day during the middle day of the season-opening Fighting Illini Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 15) at the Olympia Fields C.C.

The Trojans combined for a 1-over 281 and moved to 8-over 568 (287-281), pulling into fourth place after 36 holes. Oklahoma State took over the team lead at 9-under 551 with California second at 1-under 559 and Alabama third at 7-over 567.

Suh, who posted rounds in the 60s as a junior, inked his first this year with a 3-under 67 thanks to a 4-under back 9, part of a six-birdie day that moved the All-American into a tie for seventh at even 140 (73-67).

Onishi, who had a consecutive streak of five rounds in the 60s as a freshman, opened the season with his second straight thanks to a 1-under 69 that saw him go 1-under on the front, even on the back. He is tied for third overall at 3-under 137 (68-69), four off the lead.

Freshman Charlie Reiter posted his second straight solid round and is now tied for 21st at 3-over 143 (72-71). His second effort as a Trojan saw him birdie four times, including on 18.

Junior Cheng Jin is tied for 62nd at 12-over 152 (78-74) and junior Kyle Suppa is tied for 65th at 13-over 153 (74-79).
