Freshman Malia Nam Debuts With 3-Under At ANNIKA Intercollegiate
September 17, 2018 | Women's Golf, Features
Trojans sit at 6-under in weather-shortened first round.
Freshman Malia Nam opened her collegiate career with a 3-under 69 while Gabriela Ruffels opened her sophomore year with a 1-under 71 as the No. 6 USC women's golf team finished the weather-shortened first round of the 2018 ANNIKA Intercollegiate at the Royal G.C. in third at 6-under on Monday (Sept. 17).
Â
In addition to Nam and Ruffels, sophomore Alyaa Abdulghany was the other Trojan to finish her round, closing with an even 72. USC is three back of the lead as the first round is set to be completed beginning Tuesday at 6 a.m. PT.
Â
The Trojans have won two of the first four events in the tournament's history.
Â
Nam kicked off her Trojan career with a three-birdie round that also included an eagle on the par 5 second hole that left her two back, one off the clubhouse lead.
Â
Ruffels turned in a three-birdie round with just a pair of bogeys to tie for 11th at 1-under. She is joined in 11th with junior Allisen Corpuz and Jennifer Chang, who both have to finish first thing in the morning. Corpuz will resume on the 18th green, Chang the 17th green, both with birdie putts to start the day.
Â
Abdulghany is tied for 17th at par, mixing four birdies and four bogeys in her first round as a sophomore.
Â
USC Head Coach Justin Silverstein made his debut leading the Trojans after a combined six years with the women's and men's programs at Troy. He served four years with the women, including on the 2013 NCAA title team.
Â
"I was really pleased with the way we struck the ball today," Silverstein said. "These green complexes are extremely tough, but they'll reward well struck shots and it appears we did just that throughout the day.
Â
"Malia's 3-under was a great start to her career here and I know she's excited to get back out there to build on that tomorrow."
