THIS SEASON: Alyaa Abdulghany is a 2021 senior coming off of back-to-back All-American seasons and a U.S. Women’s Amateur semifinal appearance. She is a polished and seasoned player looking to start for her fourth season in a row. She enters the fall semester ranked a career-best 24th in the WAGR.
2020: Abdulghany, ranked No. 24 in the nation, earned WGCA and Golfweek All-American honorable mention honors as a 2020 junior. She was third on the Trojans with a career-best stroke average of 72.17 (16th-best in school history), was second in rounds of par or better with 12 and was tied for third in rounds in the 60s (three) … She had three top 10s on the season, giving her 11 for her career. She posted a season-best fourth at the Rebel Beach Intercollegiate at 5-under 211 (62-67-72) and followed it with a sixth at the Bruin Wave Invitational at 3-over 219 (71-71-77). Abdulghany posted a then-season-best tie for eighth at the Stanford Intercollegiate at 2-under 211 (70-72-69) … Before the spring semester, Abdulghany won the Australian Master of the Amateurs Championship in January in Victoria, Australia. She canned a birdie on 18 to force a playoff and then birdied the first extra hole to win the three-way playoff. She finished tied for first at 2-under 286 (72-70-71-73) … In August, Abdulghany reached the semifinals of the 2020 U.S. Women’s Amateur. She defeated Riley Smyth, 2&1, in the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Rose Zhang, 2&1, in the semis. Abdulghany beat Ellie Slama 2up in the round of 16, took care of Marissa Kirkwood 4&2 in the round of 32 and opened match play with a win over Kirsty Hodgkins by the same score … She was also low amateur at the 2020 Colorado Women’s Open, tying for 15th at 1-under 215 (71-73-71).
2019: Abdulghany earned All-WGCA All-American and All-Pac-12 honorable mention honors as a 2019 sophomore. She finished second on the team in stroke average (72.50), 21st on USC's all-time list … She wrapped the season with five top 10s and seven top 13s. Abdulghany secured her first collegiate win on Feb. 12 at the Battle at the Rock in Riverside, Calif., coming from behind to force a playoff after her 4-under 212 (70-74-68) and then winning the playoff on the second hole with a 6-foot birdie … She entered the NCAA Championships riding a streak of five straight top 15 finishes with a pair of top 7s in the postseason with a tie for seventh at the NCAA Cle Elum Regional at 5-under 211 (70-72-69) and a seventh at the Pac-12 Championships at 2-over 215 (70-74-71) … The streak also included a tie for 13th at the PING/ASU Invitational at 1-under 215 (74-71-70), a tie for seventh at the Clover Cup at 5-over 221 (76-74-71) and her win at Battle at the Rock. In the final, she finished fourth at the Stanford Intercollegiate at 5-under 208 (67-71-70), her first round and 54-hole finish both collegiate bests. Her birdie on 18 at the PING/ASU in the final round clinched the tournament for the Trojans … In April, she joined teammates Allisen Corpuz and Jennifer Chang in the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur Championship. Abdulghany tied for 40th at 6-over 150 (75-75) ... During the 2019 summer, she finished fourth at the Canadian Women's Amateur Championships at 7-under thanks to a final round 7-under 65, was the the low amateur at the Women's California State Open, taking second overall, and followed it with the title at the SCGA Women's Amateur
2018: Abdulghany earned 2018 All-Pac-12 honorable mention honors as a freshman, finishing third on the team in stroke average (73.91) while playing all 32 rounds on the season, one of just two Trojans to do so. Abdulghany posted a trio of top 10 finishes, seven in the top 19 and nine inside the top 30. She had five rounds under par on the season and nine of par or better …Abdulghany posted a tie for sixth at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at 2-over 218 (74-71-73), her best 54-hole results on the year. She tied for third in the single round of the SDSU March Mayhem at 1-under 71 before going 1-1-1 in match play with a win over Texas’ Greta Voelker, 2&1 and an all-square against Cal’s Marthe Wold … She tied for ninth in the East Lake Cup single round at 3-over 75 and won her semifinal match over Northwestern’s Sarah Cho, 3&2 … She tied for 14th in the season-opener at the Minnesota Invitational at 4-under 212 (72-69-71), her middle round a season-best … She tied for 27th at the NCAA Championships at 5-over 293 (76-73-73-71) and posted a pair of match play wins, defeating Duke’s Lisa Maguire, 4&2, in the quarterfinals. and downing Alabama’s Lakareber Abe, 1up, in the semifinals … Among her highlights after the season was reaching the round of 32 at the 2018 U.S. Women’s Amateur and tying for 12th at the 2018 Canadian Women’s Amateur at 1-under 284 (67-73-74-70).
HIGH SCHOOL: Abdulghany, who prepped at Corona Del Mar High in Newport Beach, Calif., was a three-time Junior All-American first teamer (2015-17), the 2016 USA Today High School Player of the Year and a two-time USA Today All-USA first team pick … Abdulghany, who has represented the West Team at the Wyndham Cup three times (2015-17), helped lead the U.S. to a win at the 2017 PING Junior Solheim Cup in August as well as the 2016 U.S. Junior Ryder Cup and reached the round of 32 at both the 2016 U.S. Women's Amateur and the 2016 U.S. Girls' Junior (finishing stroke play tied for eighth) … She won the 2017 Thunderbird Invitational with a 208 (69-69-70), her second AJGA victory and also took first at the 2017 Toyota Junior Golf World Cup with a 281 (76-71-66-68) … She won the inaugural 2016 California Women's State Open in October at 10-under. Also in 2016, she won the AJGA Junior at Carlton Oaks with a 139 (69-70), was second at both the Junior PGA Championship with a 208 (71-67-70) and the Thunderbird Invitational with 212 (70-73-69) and was third at the 2016 Toyota Junior Golf World Cup at 283 (71-74-68-61) … In 2015, she won the California state high school title with a 2-under 69 at the Poppy Hills G.C. in Pebble Beach, Calif., reached the round of 16 at the U.S. Junior Amateur and followed it with five consecutive top 10 finishes in junior events, including a fourth at the ANNIKA Invitational.
