Trojans Travel To Tulsa For ITA All-American Championships
September 28, 2018 | Men's Tennis, Features
Pre-qualifying play starts Saturday, with qualifying and main draw on tap next week.
After splitting up for three different tournaments last week, several members of the USC men's tennis team will soon descend on the same courts for competition at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships, set for Tulsa, Okla.Â
Four Trojans kick things off in the pre-qualifying rounds this weekend. On Saturday (Sept. 29), USC freshmen Bradley Frye and Jake Sands will be joined by veterans Jake DeVine and Tanner Smith in the pre-qualifying singles draw. Redshirt senior Smith is coming off a run to the consolation singles title at the Battle in the Bay last week, while redshirt junior also picked up some good wins with a quarterfinal run at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. Frye and Sands both nabbed their first wins as Trojans last week at the Battle in the Bay as they now prep for their first ITA All-American action this weekend.
A successful push in prequalifying means scoring a spot in the next stretch in Tulsa — qualifying rounds running Oct. 1-2. Smith already knows his time in Tulsa will be extended thanks to a qualifying doubles spot with teammate Daniel Cukierman. Together, the Trojan duo hold a No. 40 national ranking in these early goings of the 2018-19 campaign. On the singles side, three Trojans — No. 81 Laurens Verboven, No. 104 Logan Smith and Riley Smith — are already set up with spots in the qualifying singles bracket. Verboven has the most momentum of the bunch, having claimed the Oracle ITA Masters singles championships last week in Malibu, Calif.
Main draw action gets going on Oct. 4, stretching to the championship matches on Oct. 8. Ranked No. 31 in the nation in singles, sophomore Cukierman has a spot in the singles main draw, where his qualifying-round teammates hope to join him on Oct. 4. USC is also likely to have at least one doubles team in the main draw, but the pairings have yet to be announced.
