DeVine Advances To ITA All-American Qualifying Round

TULSA, OKLA — Jake DeVine will join three of his Trojan teammates in the singles qualifying draw at the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa after pounding out four wins in pre-qualifying action.

The redshirt junior powered through pre-qualifying to stake a claim on the qualifying bracket, which opens up tomorrow (Oct. 1). DeVine, along with teammates Laurens Verboven, Riley Smith and Logan Smith, are among 128 qualifiers doing battle for places in the main draw, running Oct. 4-8.

In pre-qualifying play, USC had four Trojans in action. DeVine and freshman Bradley Frye both had first-round matches to get through, while freshman Jake Sands and redshirt senior Tanner Smith advanced on walkovers. DeVine silenced his first foe 6-0, 6-0, while Frye notched a solid 7- (1)6, 6-2 win to advance. In the second round, all four Trojans were victorious to advance to Sunday's action. There, DeVine and Fryle pulled off three-set wins to move on to the all-important fourth round, while Sands and Smith were ousted in tough losses. In the last round of pre-qualifying, Frye would fall, while DeVine prevailed in three again to nab a ticket to qualifying.

Tomorrow marks the start of singles and doubles qualifying rounds. Along with the four Trojans in the singles draw, USC has a doubles duo lined up for qualifying action. Ranked No. 40 in the nation, Daniel Cukierman and Tanner Smith are locked in for an opening round qualifying match on Monday (Oct. 1) in Tulsa.
