No. 4 Hawaii Men's Volleyball Sweeps USC In Final Match Of Rainbow Warrior Classic

Rado Parapunov had 16 kills and Stijn Van Tilburg added 15 kills to help the No. 4-ranked host Hawaii men's volleyball team sweep USC, 25-12, 25-23, 25-16, in the final match of the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Warrior Classic on Saturday (Jan. 12) in Honolulu.
USC, which beat Concordia and New Jersey Institute of Technology on the first 2 days of the Rainbow Warrior Classic, suffered its first loss of 2019 to fall to 2-1. Hawaii remained unbeaten at 3-0.
Gianluca Grasso led USC with 10 kills, 4 digs and 2 aces, while Jack Wyett added 9 kills, Ryan Moss had 6 kills and Matt Douglas had 11 digs.
Van Tilburg hit .609 and had 5 digs for the Warriors, while Parapunov hit .500 and Gage Worsley had 12 digs.
Hawaii outhit the Trojans (.456 to .207) and the Warriors had more blocks (8.5 to 2.0) and digs (32 to 24).
Hawaii got off to a 5-2 start in the first set and steadily pulled away, allowing the Trojans only 4 more points after the Rainbows held an 11-8 lead (Hawaii hit .500 in the set). USC had a 10-9 lead in the second set before Hawaii scored 5 of the next 6 points and then the Warriors moved out to a 22-16 lead before Troy pulled within 23-22 but got no closer. Hawaii used a 3-0 run to build a 9-6 edge in the third set and the Warriors continued to extend their margin, including scoring 7 consecutive points to go up 23-12, while hitting .500 in the set.
USC remains on the road next week when it participates in the Off The Block Grow The Game Challenge in Lebanon, Tenn. The Trojans will play Lincoln Memorial on Jan. 18, Barton on Jan. 19 and Lindenwood on Jan. 20.
