February 12, 2019 | Women's Golf, Features
Sophomore takes the win on second playoff hole.
Sophomore Alyaa Abdulghany sank a 6-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to win her first collegiate title Tuesday (Feb. 12) at The Battle At The Rock at the Oak Quarry G.C. in Riverside, Calif.
Â
Abdulghany was tied for first after 54 holes at 4-under 212 (70-74-68), making up four strokes over the final round to catch Cal Poly's Elizabeth Scholtes. She then outlasted the Mustang golfer on the second hole to collect her first win as a Trojan.
Â
"I'm so happy and blessed with the win," Abdulghany said. "This course needed good shot-making and green reading. I believe I did well in those aspects, gave myself a chance every hole and it turned out in my favor."
Â
Abdulghany actually started her comeback late in the second round with birdies on 16 and 18 to get back to even after 36 holes.
Â
She continued the strong play early in the final round with three straight birdies on 2, 3 and 4. She birdied 9 as well to turn at 4-under and birdied 10 before a bogey on 12. She was par the rest of the way leading up the playoff.
Â
Her win is USC's second this season. Gabriela Ruffels won her first career title in the Fall at the Windy City Collegiate Championships.
Â
Senior Aiko Leong also played for the Trojans, tying for 75th at 25-over 241.
