No. 10 Stanford Steals Into A Late Lead To Beat USC Women 69-67
February 17, 2019 | Women's Basketball, Features
Minyon Moore led the Trojans with her ninth career double-double.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team had No. 10 Stanford on the ropes at Galen Center until the Cardinal got the buckets it needed to edge into a late lead, winning it 69-67. The Trojans received a heroic double-double from Minyon Moore with a team-high 18 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and four steals, but it was Stanford that grabbed the spotlight in pulling off the victory over host USC today. The Trojans go to 15-10 overall and to 5-9 in Pac-12 play with the loss, while No. 10 Stanford improves to 21-4, 11-3.
USC forced 12 first-half turnovers out of the Cardinal while Stanford shot 32.3 percent from to floor to fall behind the Trojans' 48 percent outing as USC led it 36-26 by halftime. A more sluggish third quarter by USC would open the door for the Cardinal, although the Trojans gripped a six-point lead entering the fourth. There, Stanford found its scoring touch from beyond the arc, nailing three straight 3-pointers to steal into the lead. By the final buzzer, USC had shot 36.8 percent from the floor, and Stanford was a 37.1. The Cardinal outrebounded the Trojans 45-33 and hit seven 3-pointers to just three from USC. USC scored 21 points off of Stanford's 17 turnovers on the day, but the Cardinal benefited from a 17-8 advantage on the offensive boards.
Minyon Moore's double-double let the way for USC, with Mariya Moore adding 14 points and Aliyah Mazyck scoring 13. All three Trojans knocked down six free throws apiece as USC went 22-of-29 from the line. Stanford was 16-of-25 from the stripe, with two Cardinal finishing with double-doubles. Alanna Smith had a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Dijonai Carrington scored 18 and also pulled in 12 boards. Kiana Williams added in 16 points for Stanford's winning effort.
USC manufactured an early 8-0 rally with a couple buckets coming from Kayla Overbeck in that stretch as USC worked into a lead. After Stanford knocked down a 3-pointer, Aliyah Mazyck landed a three of her own and then Minyon Moore got to the line for two, and the Trojans were up 13-6 midway through the first. By the close of the first frame, USC was up 16-11, but Stanford closed the gap down to one with early buckets to start the second. After the Cardinal closed to 16-15, the Trojans fired off a 14-0 run to build out a double-digit lead, up by 29-15 with the capper coming on a 3-pointer from Mariya Moore with 5:05 on the clock. Minutes later, USC would grip a 15-point advantage on a strike from Shalexxus Aaron, putting USC up 32-17 with 3:55 on the clock. By the halftime buzzer, USC's lead was still double digits, up 36-26 at the break.
Stanford would chip away at the Trojan advantage with a 5-0 run that had it at a four-point margin until Minyon Moore lofted in a buzzer-beater to get USC ahead 45-39 at the end of the third. Desiree Caldwell got on the scoresheet early in the fourth before Moore found Mazyck for a fast break finish that had USC up 49-41 with 7:55 to go. Stanford responded with three consecutive 3-pointers, however, and edged into the lead at 6:36 for the first time since the first minute of the game. The lead would trade hands back and forth for the next five minutes until the Cardinal found an equalizer with 1:30. Stanford would be awarded visits to the free-throw line next, burying a pair with 1:12 to go and then with 35 seconds left to go up 66-62. Mariya Moore landed two of her own to make it a two-point game with 29 ticks to go, and then Stanford hit the front end of its next visit for a 67-64 lead with 28 seconds on the clock. Minyon Moore came through with a three-point play that had the game even again with 23 seconds left, but Stanford was able to get a tough shot to fall with just three seconds left, taking the lead 69-67. USC's last look was short, and the Cardinal had their road win in the books.
The Trojans have two more ranked opponents to get through next weekend. USC will visit Oregon State in a 6 p.m. clash on Friday (Feb. 22) in Corvallis before taking on conference leader Oregon at 11 a.m. on Sunday (Feb. 24) in Eugene.
