USC Women Win Again, Top WSU 81-73
February 03, 2019 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans shoot over 50 percent from the floor once again in a key USC victory at Galen Center.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC woman's basketball team made it back-to-back 80-point games as the Trojans captured another Pac-12 victory at Galen Center. In today's battle, USC took down Washington State with a 81-73 victory that saw the Trojans shoot over 50 percent from the floor for the second straight game. With the winning week, USC improves to 13-8 overall and to 3-7 in Pac-12 play, while Washington State goes to 7-15, 2-9.
USC was paced by 27 points from Aliyah Mazyck — just two off her career best — as the senior rose to No. 22 all-time in career scoring and took over as USC's No. 5 all-time career 3-point shooter. Three other Trojans also tallied their second double-digit games of the week, with Minyon Moore scoring 21 today, Kayla Overbeck adding 12 and Asiah Jones pumping in 10. Overbeck also gathered in eight rebounds, matching Ja'Tavia's Tapley's effort on the boards, with Tapley also adding eight points for the Trojan cause. WSU was led by Borislava Hristova's 24 points to move up to No. 3 all-time in career scoring at WSU. She'd have a double-double a well, adding 10 rebounds, while Alexys Swedlund added 18 points and Chanelle Molina had 17 on five 3-pointers landed for the Cougars.
Washington State landed seven first-half 3-pointers, finding its scoring touch at the right times to fight off the Trojans' attempts to hold onto a lead. Both teams shot hot in the first quarter, with USC at 61 percent and WSU at 65 percent from the floor as the Cougars led it 30-24 after 10 minutes of action. USC manufactured an 11-0 run as WSU went cold in the second, but the Cougars landed late threes to claw back ahead by the halftime buzzer, up 40-39. At the break, USC was shooting 51.4 percent and WSU was at 51.9. By the final buzzer, USC was up to 52.3 percent from the floor overall, just outpacing WSU's 50.9 percent. The Cougars landed 11 threes in the game. USC outrebounded the Cougars 32-28 and forced 15 WSU turnovers in gathering up 12 steals, led by five from Moore.
WSU was 6-of-8 from the floor in just over five minutes of play with four 3-pointers falling in that span as the Cougars took a 19-14 lead. The Trojans closed the gap and edged into the lead on six straight points from Minyon Moore, and a back-and-forth battle ensued as the lead switched hands five times. WSU had the last word, though, scoring the last seven points to go up 30-24 with a buzzer-beating three to wrap the first. WSU's hot hands cooled in the second frame, however, as the Cougars were unable to score a field goal while the Trojans rattled off an 11-0 run into the lead. Five Trojans contributed to the rally, with Kayla Overbeck opening things. Mariya Moore found Ja'Tavia Tapley for the next bucket, and then Minyon Moore hit Aliyah Mazyck for her 14th points of the day. Moore scored the go-ahead bucket to make it 32-30 Trojans, and then Mazyck struck again. Shalexxus Aaron hit the back end of her trip to the line, and USC was up 35-30 with 4:15 on the clock. WSU wouldn't score from the floor until the 1:30 mark, but once the Cougars found their scoring touch again they capitalized. Back-to-back WSU threes tugged the visitors back on top, up 40-39 to wrap the first half.
WSU stayed hot to open the third, scoring seven points in just over a minute to lead it 47-39 and prompt the Trojans to take an early timeout to regroup. Mariya Moore scored her first points of the day out of the timeout to give the Trojans a lift, and then Ja'Tavia Tapley followed to cut the deficit to 47-43. WSU knocked down its ninth and 10th 3-pointers soon after to build out a 55-47 lead, only to see Minyon Moore convert back-to-back three-point plays to bring it back to a two-point game, down 55-53 with 3:50 remaining in the third. With the Cougars reeled in finally, the Trojans found their stride. Mazyck manufactured five straight points to get to 25 on the day and take the Trojans into the lead, and then Moore added two more to cap off a 7-0 USC surge to lead it 65-49 by the end of the third. In the fourth, USC stayed the course. A 6-0 rally on scores from Tapley, Overbeck and Mazyck got the Trojans a key nine-point lead by the midway mark of the fourth, and USC was able to chug along to victory with a final 81-73 decision over the Cougars.
USC now turns to a road trip for more Pac-12 play, heading first to Utah to take on the Utes at 7 p.m. MT on Friday (Feb. 8) in Salt Lake City. From there the Trojans head to Boulder to take on Colorado at 1 p.m. MT on Sunday (Feb. 10).
