Trojans combine for a 20-under second round, now just five back of first.
Senior Justin Suh fired an 8-under 64 while junior Kyle Suppa was almost his equal with a 7-under 65 – each one off their respective collegiate bests -- to lead the No. 4 USC men's golf team to a 20-under 268, pulling into second place at the Amer Ari Invitational on Friday (Feb. 8) at the Waikoloa Kings Course.
The Trojans, combining for the second-best round of the season, are now second at 31-under 545 (277-268), five back of first-place Oklahoma State and a shot ahead of Texas, which finished today with a 23-under 265.
Suh now has a team-best nine rounds in the 60s and 12 rounds of par or better in 14 outings after his tremendous afternoon saw him sink six birdies as well as an eagle on the par 5 second hole. He is tied for second at 12-under 132 (68-64), one back of Texas' Cole Hammer.
Suppa registered five birdies today and an eagle on the par 4 5th hole to move into eighth at 8-under 136 (71-65). He has twice posted 64s as a Trojan, including on the same course in 2017. The 65 is his fourth round in the 60s this year.
Sophomore Issei Tanabe is tied for ninth at 7-under 137 (69-68) after his four-birdie outing, giving him seven rounds in the 60s this year, including four in a row.
Sophomore Kaito Onishi is tied for 31st at 3-under 141 (69-72), using a pair of late birdies to finish even today. Freshman Charlie Reiter is tied for 51st at 1-under 143 (72-71), posting three birdies and an eagle on 4.
Senior Sam, Kim, playing individually, is tied for 64th at 1-over 145 (76-69) after a 3-under showing today.
The final round is set for Saturday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. PT.
