The two Trojans join USC All-American Kerrigan Miller on the prestigious official watch list
NEW YORK – USC senior defender Jackie Gilbert (Pleasanton, Calif.) and sophomore midfielder Kelsey Huff (Eastport, N.Y.) were each added to the official watch list for the 2019 Tewaaraton Award as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation on Thursday, April 11. The two Women of Troy join junior All-American midfielder Kerrigan Miller (Bayport, N.Y.) who was named to the initial watch list in late February.
Players who were not named to the initial list had opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season has progressed. Gilbert and Huff are part of the second of two sets of midseason watch-list additions. On April 25, the field will be narrowed to 25 men's and 25 women's nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions. Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced on May 9 and will be invited to the 19th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on May 30.
The Tewaaraton Foundation selects the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse to highlight contenders for the 2019 award. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation. Both Gilbert and Huff make their first appearance on the watch list. Miller was a midseason addition in 2018 and makes her second-career appearance on the watch list.
Several Trojans have advanced to be named to the list of Tewaaraton Award nominees. Most recently, three-time All-American Michaela Michael received nominee status in 2017. Michael and All-American midfielder Amanda Johansen were the first two Trojans ever to be named to the Tewaaraton Award's watch list at the beginning of 2016. Michael and All-American defender Courtney Tarleton were each named nominees at the end of that 2016 season. Michael, junior defender Lydia Sutton and junior goalie Gussie Johns were each on the 2017 watch list. Johns and Sutton were on the initial 2018 watch list and were later joined by Miller.
This season, Huff leads the Trojans in points (39) and goals (33). She has produced six hat-trick games and has made contributions in all facets of the game with 29 ground balls, 25 caused turnovers, and nine draw controls. Huff has scored four of the Trojans' 13 game-winning goals this spring and was chosen as the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week on April 1. As only a sophomore, Huff already ranks 10th all-time at USC in career points (75) and goals (64).
Gilbert serves as one of the Trojans' captains and was named to the Inside Lacrosse Women's midseason All-America second team. She leads the Pac-12 and ranks 20th in the nation for draw controls (5.87 dcpg) and was named the Pac-12's Defensive Player of the Week after she helped lead the Trojans to the program's first-ever shutout. She has put up seven-career games with 10 or more draw controls and has 24 ground balls and 24 caused turnovers this season. Gilbert moved up to third all-time at USC for career draw controls (191) this season and is up to seventh for ground balls (78) and fourth in caused turnovers (71).
