USC Women's Tennis Defeats Illinois State 4-0 in NCAA First Round

The No. 13 USC women's tennis team opened NCAA Tournament play by sweeping Illinois State 4-0 in the First Round on Saturday (May 4) in Marks Stadium in Los Angeles. The Trojans improve their season record to 19-7 overall with the victory in their 36th NCAA Tournament appearance.
 7USC opened up the afternoon with a win from Trojan duo No. 1 ranked Kulikov/Valdes over Redbird pair Golanova/Damnjavnovic 6-1 on court one. This win improved the USC pair's record to 26-6 on the season. Court three was the next to finish as Trojan tandem Branstine/Jaeger defeated Illinois State's Bravo/Mihaleva 6-2 to claim the doubles point for the Women of Troy. After the doubles point was secured, court two's match between USC's Weissmann/Willson and Illinois State's Kustkova/Fitzgerald was suspended.

The Trojans rolled their momentum from doubles over to singles as USC's Rianna Valdes defeated Illinois State's Jana Kustkova 6-2, 6-0 on court four to push the Trojans ahead 2-0 overall.

USC continued to grind and Trojan Ana Neffa closed out her match on court three with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Redbird Natalia Bravo to put USC in a position to potentially sweep.

Minutes after Neffa's win, USC's No. 83 ranked Angela Kulikov defeated Illinois State's Tara Damnjanovic 6-4, 6-1 on court two to clinch the win for the Women of Troy to help them advance to the Round of 32.

After the clinch, all the remaining courts in play were suspended. All Trojan players won their first sets.

Earlier in the day, UNLV upset No. 26 ranked Texas Tech 4-3 in the first round match. After being tied at 3-3, the match came down to a thrilling finish as UNLV's Connie Li and Texas Tech's Lana Rush faced off on court six. In the third set, Li pushed ahead, but Rush closed back in to force a tiebreak. After a tough battle, Li came out on top winning the third set 7-6 (7) to clinch the match for the Rebels.

USC will take on UNLV tomorrow (May 5) at 1 p.m. in the NCAA Second Round at Marks Stadium. USC is 7-0 all-time against UNLV.Â
