Chris Clarke Earns NCBWA All-American Honors
June 12, 2019 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – USC's standout closer Chris Clarke was named to the NCBWA All-America second team this week, becoming the program's first All-American since 2016.
Clarke earned the honor just over a week after being selected in the fourth round of the MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs. Clarke was the highest drafted USC player since Wyatt Strahan was selected in the third round by the Reds in 2014, and the first Trojan since David Oppenheim in 2016 to earn All-American recognition. He's the first Trojan to earn second-team honors since Garrett Stubbs in 2015. Oppenheim was named to Baseball America's third team in 2016.
The junior righty had a tremendous season out of the bullpen for the Trojans, earning All-Pac-12 honors thanks to a 1.03 ERA and 3.33/1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Clarke posted 60 strikeouts in 52.1 innings pitched, allowing just 32 hits and 18 walks for a .170 opponent batting average and 0.96 WHIP. He was third in the Pac-12 with eight saves this season and finished a total of 25 games for the Trojans.
For his career, Clarke compiled a total of 183.1 innings pitched, 11 wins, 149 strikeouts and nine saves. He was a starter his first two years at Troy, but had by far his best season this year after transitioning to the pen.
