No. 5 Long Beach State Men's Volleyball Comes Back To Defeat USC

Spencer Olivier had 14 kills while hitting .417 and added 4 aces to lead the No. 5-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team, the 2-time defending NCAA champion, to an 18-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-22 comeback home win over unranked USC in a non-conference match on Friday (Jan. 17) at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach.
Long Beach State remained undefeated in 2020 at 4-0, while USC dropped its fourth straight match to fall to 1-4.
Kyle Gear led USC with 15 kills and 6 digs, while Billy Fauntleroy had 10 kills, Brandon Browning had 7 kills, Cole Paxson had 13 digs and Chris Hall had 7 digs.
Ethan Siegfried added 10 kills for LBSU, Shane Holdaway had 8 kills (hitting .538) and Mason Briggs had 6 digs.
Long Beach State hit .208 to USC's .125. LBSU served 7 aces and had 16.0 blocks to USC's 10.0.
USC got off to a quick start in the opening set, stretching an early 3-1 lead to 6-2 and then 8-3 and the Trojans kept pulling away while hitting .318 in the set to LBSU's .040. The second set was tight until the Beach reeled off 4 unanswered points to go up 18-13 and the Trojans couldn't recover as LBSU served 3 aces in the set. Long Beach State steadily extended an early 3-1 lead in the third set and the closest USC could get was 13-11 before the Beach regained control. LBSU jumped out to a 6-1 edge in the fourth set, then built it to 15-8 before USC closed to within 16-14 but the Beach held off the Trojans.
USC now travels to the East Coast next weekend to play in the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge in State College, Penn. On Friday (Jan. 24) the Trojans face No. 15 Ohio State of the MIVA at 4:30 p.m. ET and then on Sunday (Jan. 26) Troy plays host No. 14 Penn State of the EIVA at 4 p.m. ET. Fellow MPSF member UCLA is also competing in the tourney.
