USC Falls 4-3 to Notre Dame at College MatchDay

The USC women's tennis team lost a tight battle to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 4-3 today (Feb. 15) in Orlando, Fla. The match, which aired on the Tennis Channel Plus, was part of USTA's College MatchDay. The Women of Troy are now 4-2 on the season.
In doubles, Notre Dame made their mark first as Waldram/Lilien defeated USC's Saca/Van Alphen 6-2 on court three. Over on court two, the Trojan pair of Jaeger/Willson evened out the score with a 6-2 victory of their own over Notre Dame's Freeman/Taylor. Finally, the No. 36 ranked Trojans Cayetano/Kulikov defeated Notre Dame's Corse/Spence 6-2 to claim the doubles point for USC.
Although the Trojans held a 1-0 lead, Notre Dame put the first point on the board for the singles portion of the competition as Maeve Koscielski defeated USC freshman Payton Saca 6-1, 6-1 on court six. Shortly thereafter, Notre Dame pushed ahead 2-1 as Page Freeman beat USC sophomore No. 119 ranked Danielle Willson 6-3, 6-3 on court three.
The Trojans continued to battle and saw success from court two as freshman Eryn Cayetano was victorious over Notre Dame's Cameron Corse 6-4, 6-3. Trojan captain No. 15 ranked Angela Kulikov followed suit with a win of her own over Notre Dame's Zoe Spence 6-4, 6-2 on court one to push USC ahead 3-2.
With their victories in both of their matches today, Cayetano and Kulikov remained undefeated and have not yet lost a singles or doubles match this dual season.
The Fighting Irish responded with a win as No. 122 Ally Bojczuk beat USC senior No. 108 ranked Sydney Van Alphen 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 on court four.
The match outcome was determined by the result on court five. After winning the first set 6-3, USC sophomore Estella Jaeger lost the second set 6-3 to Notre Dame's Julia Lilien. The third set was a battle and a 6-6 score resulted in a tiebreak. Notre Dame's Lilien came out on tip winning the set 7-6 (3) to clinch the match for the Fighting Irish.
USC's next action will be a road trip south to face San Diego State on Friday (Feb. 21) and San Diego on Saturday (Feb. 22).
