No. 3 UC Santa Barbara Men's Volleyball Sweeps USC
February 29, 2020 | Men's Volleyball, Features
Randy DeWeese had 20 kills while hitting .515 to help the No. 3-ranked UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team sweep USC, 27-25, 25-21, 27-25, in a non-conference match on Saturday (Feb. 29) in USC's North Gym.
UCSB won its sixth consecutive match to improve to 12-2 overall. USC fell to 3-13, its slowest start since 2016 when it also was 3-13. The Trojans were swept for the eighth time this season. The victory gave the Gauchos a slim 56-55 edge in the series with USC that dates to 1970.
The afternoon match was played in the quaint North Gym, the original home of USC volleyball, because of a scheduling conflict in the Galen Center.
Kyle Gear and Billy Fauntleroy each had 11 kills to pace USC (Gear hit .533 and Fauntleroy added 5 digs), while Vecas Lewin had 10 kills while hitting .769.
Ryan Wilcox added 8 kills for UCSB (hitting .467), 5 digs, 2 aces and 2 blocks and Casey McGarry had 7 digs.
UCSB hit .456 to USC's .365. The Gauchos also had more blocks (7.0 to 2.0).
The first set was tight before a 4-point run gave USC a 20-16 lead, but UC Santa Barbara tied it at 22-22 and then scored the set's final 2 points while hitting .357 and getting 3.5 blocks. UCSB used an early 4-point run in the second set to open up a 7-3 margin that USC could not overcome as the Gauchos hit a blazing .696 in the set. The Trojans jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third set, but UCSB slowly crept back and then moved ahead 21-20 by scoring 3 unanswered points and soon after tallied the match's final 2 points.
Next week, USC hosts a pair of non-conference teams, first meeting St. Francis on Thursday (March 5) and then Lindenwood on Saturday (March 7). Both matches begin at 7 p.m. PT in the Galen Center.
