USC trailed 17-16 in the first set before it went on a 4-point run, including 3 aces by Browning, to move out to a 21-17 lead, all the cushion it needed. The second set was tied at 13-13 before the Tritons starting inching away while hitting .550 and getting 4 blocks in the set. USC overcame a 13-11 deficit in the third set by scoring 6 of the next 8 points to forge a 17-15 margin and the Trojans extended it to 21-18 before UCSD came back to score the set's final 4 points while hitting .500 and getting 4 more blocks. Back-to-back USC points midway through the fourth set gave the Trojans a 12-10 lead and Troy built it to 21-18, but UCSD then scored 5 consecutive points to go up 23-21 and USC could not recover.
