Grand Canyon Men's Volleyball Sweeps USC
February 08, 2020 | Men's Volleyball, Features
Hugo Fischer had 17 kills while hitting .680 and Christian Janke added 15 kills while hitting .565 to lead the Grand Canyon men's volleyball team to a 25-21, 25-18, 25-18 sweep over USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday (Feb. 8) in USC's Galen Center.
Grand Canyon improved to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the MPSF, while USC fell to 2-9 overall and 0-2 in league play. This is the Trojans' slowest start in a season since 2016, when they also began with a 2-9 mark.
Brandon Browning led USC with 8 kills and 6 digs, while Vecas Lewin added 7 kills (hitting .455), Clay Dickinson came off the bench to get 6 kills and Cole Paxson had a match-best 10 digs.
Grand Canyon hit .455 in the match to USC's .267. The Lopes had 5.0 blocks, while the Trojans didn't make a block.
USC fell behind 12-8 in the opening set but caught up at 13-13 before Grand Canyon regained control with a 3-point run to build a 16-13 edge that Troy couldn't overcome as the Lopes hit .438. USC used a 4-point run to go up 10-7 in the second set, but GCU answered right back with a 7-point run to move out to a 14-10 margin and then steadily added to the lead (the Lopes hit .435 in the set). Grand Canyon went on an early 6-point run in the third set to build a 9-3 lead, all the cushion it needed to close out the match while hitting .500.
USC now begins a 2-week Mountain Pacific Sports Federation road trip, next week playing at No. 8 Pepperdine on Friday (Feb. 14) at 7 p.m. PT and then visiting No. 7 UCLA on Sunday (Feb. 6) at 5 p.m. PT in a match that will air live on Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Los Angeles before contests the following week at No. 13 Stanford (Feb. 20) and No. 2 BYU (Feb. 22).
