No. 6 Stanford Holds Court Over Visiting USC Women

The Cardinal earns a 79-59 win over the Trojans after a big first half at Maples Pavilion.
STANFORD, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team came up against a determined No. 6 Stanford squad and saw the Cardinal land 10 first-half 3-pointers to build out an insurmountable lead over the visiting Trojans. USC outscored its host in the second half, but couldn't reel in the Cardinal in taking a 79-59 loss on Sunday afternoon at Maples Pavilion. USC goes to 12-11 overall and to 4-8 in Pac-12 play with the road loss. Stanford is now 21-3, 10-2.
USC wrapped the game shooting 27.7 percent from the floor to trail Stanford's 42.1 percent. By the final buzzer 11 Stanford threes had fallen, while USC hit six. Alissa Pili punched up her eighth straight game in double digits in scoring a team-high 12 points, with Aliyah Jeune adding 11 for the Trojans. Stanford received a game-high 14 points from Lexie Hull, who hit three 3-pointers. Nadia Fingall and Ashten Prechtel scored 11 apiece for the Cardinal.
Stanford scored the first 13 points of the game and netted six 3-pointers in the first frame to put visiting USC on its heels. Alissa Pili broke up the drought with a 3-pointer, and Aliyah Jeune landed one of her own later, but the Trojans were staring at a 28-6 deficit just 10 minutes into the game. USC was able to get its feet under it in the next frame, but Stanford's long-range attack was still clicking as the Cardinal led it 49-21 by halftime. USC had shot 21.9 percent in those first 20 minutes, while Stanford was clicking off a 48.5 percent effort while nailing 10 first-half 3-pointers.
USC didn't back down in the next stretch. The Cardinal was getting its time at the free-throw line, going 8-of-10 from the stripe while hitting just three field goals, while USC carved down the deficit with 17 points in the third. Jeune got into double digits along the way, and USC got the score to 63-38 entering the fourth. The Trojans remained undeterred and continued to battle, outscoring Stanford in the fourth 21-6 while Pili punched up her 17th double-digit game of the season to help round out a final 79-59 loss to the top-10 Cardinal on the road.
