Trojans take sixth at Southwestern Invitational
Junior Cameron Henry and senior Kaito Onishi weathered another windy day to each fire 1-over 73s to lead the USC men's golf team in the final round of the season-opening Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch C.C. in Westlake Village, Calif., on Wednesday (Jan. 27).
Â
The Trojans finished sixth in their first action of the season at 36-over 900 (301-296-303). San Diego State rallied to win the tournament at 10-over 874. The Aztecs' final round was one of only three better than the Trojans' effort Wednesday.
Â
"I was pretty proud of the guys today," said USC Coach J.T. Higgins after completing his first tournament with the Trojans. "Conditions were similar to Monday, cold but with a different wind and the course was set up really difficult today.
Â
"But the guys fought hard throughout the day and hung in there. We were about 19-over with four or five holes to and played 4 under coming. Sixth was about as good as we were going to do today and we got there."
Â
For the second consecutive season, Henry kicked off his campaign with a top 20 finish, tying for 15th at 6-over 222 (77-72-73). He tied for 13th in his first event as a sophomore.
Â
Henry was 1-over going out with birdies on 6 and 7, withstood doubles on 8 and 10, then settled back in to finish the final eight holes at 2-under.
Â
Onishi, who only played in four events as a junior, looks to regain his All-American sophomore form and started his final season with a tie for 20th at 8-over 224 (77-74-73). He was 3-over on his front today despite two birdies and was 4-over through 11, but got hot with three straight late birdies between 15 and 17.
Â
Freshman Shane Ffrench tied for 27th at 10-over 226 (70-74-82), a tough front nine sending him outside the top 20. He was 10-over today through 11, but finished his final seven holes at par.
Â
Senior Leon D'Souza tied for 48th at 18-over 234 (77-78-79) while sophomore Tyler Guo tied for 60th at 22-over 238 (84-76-78).
Â
USC is back in action next week at the annual Amer Ari Invitational in Kamuela, Hawaii, Feb. 2-4, and will use the same starting five.
