USC Women’s Tennis Falls 4-3 to Arizona State in Pac-12 Quarterfinals

SAN DIEGO—The No. 5 seeded USC women's tennis team fell in a close match 4-3 to the No. 4 seed Arizona State in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Women's Tennis Championship today (Apr. 24) in San Diego. With the loss, the Trojans now hold an 11-10 overall record.
Doubles kicked off the morning and the Trojans made their mark first. USC's Dvorak/Willson claimed the first win by defeating Arizona State's Kolarova/Morlet 6-1 on court three. The Trojans claimed the doubles point as Cayetano/Kulikov were victorious over the Sun Devil pair of Hattingh/John-Baptiste 6-1.
USC entered singles with a 1-0 lead. As singles got underway, Trojan freshman Naomi Cheong was forced to retire after the first set giving a point to the Sun Devils. On court four, USC junior Danielle Willson fell 6-4, 6-1 to ASU's Giulia Morlet to give the Sun Devils a 2-1 advantage.
USC redshirt senior Clare McKee tallied a win for the Women of Troy by defeating Arizona State's Domenika Turkovic 6-4, 6-2 on court six to tie up the match at 2-2.
The Sun Devils once again took the lead as Ilze Hattingh beat USC junior No. 59 Salma Ewing 6-4, 6-3 on court one to make the score 3-2. Trojan sophomore Eryn Cayetano evened out the score once again by defeating ASU's Sammi Hampton 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 tying the score up at 3-3.
Arizona State would have the final word as Marianna Argyrokastriti beat USC redshirt senior Summer Dvorak 7-6, 6-4 on court five to clinch the match for the Sun Devils.
With the loss ending USC's Pac-12 Championship run, the Trojans now await the NCAA Tennis Selection Show which will air on Monday, May 3 at 3 p.m. PT at NCAA.com.
