USC Women's Golf Rockets Into Lead After 36 Holes Of NCAA Stanford Regional
May 10, 2022 | Women's Golf
Avery now first, Navarossa tied for secocnd, Morard tied for eighth for Trojans.
Four of USC's five starters fired par or better rounds - led by freshman Amari Avery's 67 and sophomore Brianna Navarrosa's 68 - as the Trojans leapfrogged into first place after 36 holes of the NCAA Stanford (Calif.) Regional at the Stanford G.C. on Tuesday (May 10).
USC's 8-under 276 was its third-best round of the season in relation to par and lowered Troy's overall score to 12-under 556 (280-276), good for a four- stroke lead over No. 1 host Stanford and seven ahead of day 1 leader LSU. The round is also tied for USC's third-best ever in relation to par at an NCAA Regional, matching the same effort at the Stanford Regional in 2013.
Avery's 67 rocketed her into first at 6-under 136 (69-67) with a two-stroke lead over Navarrosa (70-68) and LSU's Carla Tejedo. Avery already has a pair of wins this year while Navarrosa is after her first career win.
The Trojans, looking to extend an NCAA Championships final streak that started in 1998, are a comfortable 20 shots ahead of Purdue and Northwestern, who are tied for fourth. Only the top four teams from each of the six 12-team NCAA Regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships final set for the Grayhawk G.C. in Scottsdale, Ariz., hosted by Arizona State, May 20-25. This is the first year of this format.
Avery began the day with a bogey on 1, squared her day with a birdie on 2 and never looked back. Birdies on 7, 9, 10 and 12 moved her to 4-under, where she finished. Avery, who is in line for potentially her seventh top 8 this season, now has nine rounds in the 60s this year, the third-most ever in a season at USC and the most ever by a freshman.
Navarrosa (70-68) was almost as sharp with a five-birdie, two-bogey round that has her vying for her second top 10 this year and sixth top 16.
Sophomore Michaela Morard is tied for eighth at 1-under 141 (70-71) after a par second round. She was 2-over through four holes but finished the final 14 holes at 2-under.
Senior Katherine Muzi is tied for 16th at 1-over 143 (73-70) following her team-best 16th round of par or better while freshman Xin (Cindy) Kou is tied for 20th at 2-over 144 (71-73).
USC, which won regionals at Stanford in 2013 and 2016, will tee off at 9:06 a.m. in the final round Wednesday with Stanford and LSU.
