Gigi Maccagnini Leads USC Cross Country At Highlander Invitational
October 14, 2023 | Women's Cross Country
The junior finishes the course just 2 seconds off her personal best
Junior Gigi Maccagnini placed 25th to lead the USC women's cross country team to an 11th-place finish at the Highlander Invitational (6K) at the Ag Ops Course in Riverside, Calif. today (Oct. 14). Four of the eight Trojan runners set their 6K personal best and two others were within 2 seconds of setting a PR at that distance.
"We did well for today. Gigi (Maccagnini) led the charge for us and freshman Haley Spoden had a very good race," said Associate Head Coach Cross Country/Assistant T&F Coach Jebreh Harris. "We have a few things we need to continue to work on as we head into the conference championship, but I'm confident that we will put it together."
Maccagnini had a time of 21:11.3 to finish 25th overall, 20th among scoring runners, to lead USC. Her time was just two seconds off her 6K PR set in 2021 on the same Ag Ops Course. Maccagnini moved up 11 spots during the final 2K of the race, third-best among the top 30 finishers.
USC's second finisher was freshman Marjourie Lopez who placed 44th, 39th in scoring, with a time of 21:40.2. Lopez has finished as one of USC's top two runners in each of her first three collegiate races.
The third Trojan to cross the finish line was graduate transfer Marina Soares, who placed 69th, 62nd in scoring, with a time of 22:00.4. That time was just 1.5 seconds off her PR set at the LMU South Bay Meet to open the season. Fellow graduate transfer Tracy Towns had a personal-best 6K time of 22:17.3 to finish fourth among the Trojans and 85th overall (74th in scoring). Towns moved up seven positions in the final 2K of the race.
USC's final scoring runner was freshman Haley Spoden who had a PR of 22:30.1 to finish 100th overall and 86th in scoring. Right behind her and sixth among the Trojans was sophomore Lucia Rabolli with a PR of 22:32.0. Rabolli finished 101st, 87th among the scoring runners.
Redshirt sophomore Jacqueline Duarte finished 119th, 97th in scoring, with a PR of 23:03.6. She moved up four position over the final 2K and bettered her 6K PR by 32 seconds. Graduate transfer Marne Sullivan was USC's final runner and she had a time of 23:26.3 to place 144th.
The Trojans will next be in action at the 2023 Pac-12 Cross Country Championships to be hosted by Washington and held at Chambers Creek Regional Park in University Place, Wash. on Oct. 27.
