Okako Adika’s Double-Double Helps USC Women’s Basketball Down Oregon 56-51
February 10, 2023 | Women's Basketball
Trojans snap a 12-game slump against the Ducks with an impressive comeback effort at Galen Center.
LOS ANGELES — The USC women's basketball team earned a long-awaited win over Oregon tonight, snapping a 12-game losing skid to the Ducks with a dominant defensive effort that helped the Trojans capture a 56-51 victory at Galen Center. A double-double from Okako Adika with four 3-pointers made helped turn the tide for the Trojans, who trailed by as much a 14 points in the first half before mounting their largest comeback win of the season. The victory improves USC to 18-6 overall and to 8-5 in Pac-12 play, while Oregon goes to 14-10, 5-8.
It was slow going for the Trojans out of the gates while Oregon built out a double-digit lead, but USC held the Ducks to just nine points in the second quarter to get back in reach. USC would trail 29-21 at halftime after shooting just 25 percent from the floor in the first half. Oregon was hitting at a 39.3-percent clip and had a 20-17 edge on the boards by the break. The Trojan turnaround came in the third, as USC made a 9-0 rally to take its first lead of the game with 1:50 on the clock. Oregon wouldn't lead again the rest of the way. USC would wrap the game on 30.2 percent shooting from the floor with seven 3-pointers made — four from Okako Adika. Oregon wound up at 34.5 percent overall and was 4-of-15 from 3-point range. USC worked out ahead on the boards 44-38 to help keep the Ducks at bay down the stretch.
USC had Okako Adika and Destiny Littleton each finish with a game-high 18 points, with Adika hauling in 11 rebounds for her second double-double as a Trojan. Rayah Marshall matched that with 11 rebounds to go along with seven booming blocks for the Trojan cause. Oregon received 14 points from India Rogers and 10 from Grace VanSlooten, with Phillipina Kyei bringing in 15 rebounds for the Ducks.
USC found its touch from beyond the arc to open the third, with Destiny Littleton knocking down a three to start the half. Adika buried her third of the night to tug the Trojans within four at 33-29. Oregon fired back with a three next, but USC was undeterred. After trading buckets, a putback from Adika was followed by back-to-back steals from Doumbia. The first helped fuel a 3-pointer from Littleton, and the next would send USC on the attack for another Littleton strike. Her runner snarled things up at 38-38 with 4:00 on the clock. Adika would take it to the hoop two minutes later to make it a 9-0 USC run into the lead for the first time, up 40-38 at 1:50. Marshall would take it coast-to-coast with 55 ticks to go, and Adika had the last word with a jumper following a Duck bucket, and USC took a 44-41 lead into the fourth. Offenses slowed on both ends next, with just a bucket apiece falling in the first five minutes of the final frame. Marshall hit the front end of her free-throw visit at the 5:03 mark, nudging USC ahead 47-43. Adika nailed a key three for the USC cause soon after to net USC a 50-43 advantage, although the Ducks trimmed things to 51-47 with 23 seconds on the clock. Littleton and Sissoko would put in perfect stands from the stripe around a scored from Oregon, and USC was up 55-49 with 13 seconds to go to stay the course to a final 56-51 victory.
