USC Women’s Basketball Beats Oregon State In OT 60-56
February 12, 2023 | Women's Basketball
Trojans stay perfect when holding opponents to 58 points or fewer this season.
LOS ANGELES — Clarice Akunwafo's first basket of the day was a big one. Her putback in the paint in the final minute of overtime helped secure a hard-fought victory for the USC women's basketball team, which tallied a 60-56 win over visiting Oregon State to complete the Trojans' first home sweep of the Oregon schools since 2013-14. The win also improves USC to 19-6 overall and to 19-5 in Pac-12 play, while Oregon State goes to 11-14, 3-11.
Rayah Marshall had almost as many rebounds to her name as the Beavers had as a team by halftime, with Marshall pulling in 11 of USC's 25 first-half boards to lead OSU's team tally of 14 by the break. USC was shooting 40.6 percent from the floor to 30.8 percent by the Beavers as the Trojans gripped a 31-24 lead through those first 20 minutes of action. USC's efficiency hit the skids in the second half while OSU picked up its pace, but USC would find the baskets it needed in overtime while the Beavers came up empty from the floor in those final five minutes. USC would wrap the game shooting 33.8 percent overall and making just two 3-pointers. OSU, meanwhile, finished out a 37.3 percent and landed six 3-pointers, although USC won the battle of the boards 43-37 and forced 14 turnovers by the Beavers.
Destiny Littleton led USC in scoring with 18 points, with Rayah Marshall (11 points) and Okako Adika (10) also finishing in double digits for the Trojans. Marshall also hauled in 14 rebounds to notch her 13th double-double of the season. OSU received a double-double from Raegan Beers with 18 points and 16 rebounds, with Bendu Yeaney adding 12 points for the Beavers.
Marshall worked her way into a double-double with a couple early buckets for the Trojans, but the Beavers bit back with a three-point play and a 3-pointer to get the margin to three at 35-32 with 7:30 on the clock. Adika landed USC's first 3-pointer of the game a couple minutes later for a boost to lead it 42-35. But that would be the only basket to fall from the floor for USC in the quarter. Kadi Sissoko landed a free throw in the final second of the frame to follow two Beaver buckets, and it was a tight 43-39 USC lead entering the fourth. Oregon State would get ahead of the Trojans for the first time since the first minutes of the game with a 7-0 rally that bumped the Beavers to a 48-47 advantage with 6:00 to go. OSU free throws would build the lead to 51-47 with 4:00 remaining while USC failed to land a basket for almost five minutes. Littleton broke the silence at 3:05, and then Adika landed a three and followed with a free throw to knot the game at 53-53 with 2:16 on the clock. After two OSU free throws fell, Littleton struck for the equalizer at 1:40, and it would stay snarled at 55-55 to wrap regulation and bring up overtime.
The Beavers got to the free-throw line in the first minute of OT, making the back end to lead it 56-55, only to see Littleton land a strike to nudge USC ahead 57-56. Neither team would score for the next three minutes until Clarice Akunwafo pulled in a rebound and put it through to get USC ahead 59-56 with 31 ticks to go, and the USC defense would continue to stymie the Beavers the rest of the way, topping things off with a Littleton free throw with 11.4 seconds left and wrapping up a 60-56 victory for the Trojans.

The Beavers struck first, but the Trojans fired back with a 6-0 surge keyed by back-to-back strikes from Rayah Marshall and a finish from Kayla Williams to an early 6-2 USC advantage. Williams would strike again later in the frame to take the Trojans ahead 15-5, although OSU would land a three and a late bucket to make it a 15-10 margin at the close of the first.
